Can't create Psychonauts profile

Just purchased this today, but when it opens to the "create new profile" scene, I'm unable to choose a bunk (with the spacebar, or the 'A' button on my controller). I can look back and forth between the three sets of bunks, just won't let me select one. I made sure the redistributables were installed. Also, the character animation of Raz does odd things throughout my attempts, running into walls, slithering sideways...
Is this game compatible with Windows 10? Because these feel like compatibility problems. I played this game years ago, and it is definitely acting oddly. Any ideas? I'd much rather play then request a refund.

Thanks for the suggestion, I did also try that (tried both the one in the 'redist' folder, and the download direct from Microsoft.)
EDIT: Forgot to mention I've tried using Windows compatibility modes.

For yourself and anyone else encountering the problem I've found the fix. Make sure Psychonauts is installed on your C: drive and NOT on any external drives, This cures the problem.
