Why don't you just try it? I never asked that question and went with the controller from the get-go; the only disadvantage is that button-prompts are for keyboard., but other than that it works just fine.
figured id ask cause some ports have controls built by a man with 7 fingers on each hand

I definitely recommend getting a controller for this game. I played through the first level with a mouse and keyboard before switching to a Xbox 360 controller, and it was so much more comfortable and easier to control, especially with some of the trickier platforming later on.

Sounds like you had Steam Controller support messing with you. It does have Gamepad prompts, albeit only for generic (1-12 buttons) gamepads instead of the standard Xinput layout. This was fixed in an update, and you should be seeing Xbox 360 prompts now.
its honestly been working good with mouse and keyboard. only issue i have sometimes is i have to left click a few times to hit something and the controls to use things are weird since i have to face stuff and i can only move in 8 directions technically. but definately doable if youv played platformers before on pc. just kinda floaty is the way id describe it. not portal floaty but floaty so sometimes gotta do the oh ♥♥♥♥ circles in the air so you dont overshoot something but other than that its fine

I originally played the game on the PS2, so always knew it with the controller. I did manage to finish the game with keyboard and mouse, but I play with a Xbox 360 controller on here all the time now. It is definitely a lot easier to maneuver through levels, like the turning logs in Basic Braining with a controller than a keyboard and mouse.:Dogen:
