meteor and how it works

i been playing local host, but my friends kinda bailed on me.
i want to join an actual server. i cannot really grind too much due to my job, so I'd like a server with boosted stats or maybe easier crafting. (i don't want play timers since again i don't want to play for 3 hours and feel like i accomplished nothing)

i do see the meteor timer though. so what happens after the meteor? can you actually deflect it? if you don't deflect it does your character get deleted? or only the server? how does that work? do you guys enjoy restarting from scratch if so?

Either you destroy the meteor with the lasers, or the meteor hits the planet and destroys large parts of it. You can continue playing in both cases.
