       IMPORTANT: Lost progress, what to do? [GUIDE]
Sigh.. lost all my progress.. prestiges, perks, items, levels and ranks.. all gone!
Why in earth online multiplayer game is saving progress in client side?
This is only game I have ever experienced this kind of serious issues.

Put atleast big screen on game start with text:
"IMPORTANT! Game has serious bugs which can cause you to lose all your progress. Make sure you backup your steam userdata folder every day".

Every other guide at 10th Dec told me to restart the game first, so I did and lost everything!
DO NOT CLOSE THE GAME! If you do you will lose all your progress save also from the steam cloud.

Below is some instructions how to get progress save back, reset corrupted profile, backup the progress. Please tell your friend that he should backup his profile asap because this bug can happen to anyone.


WHAT TO DO IF YOU LOST PROGRESS?
DO NOT CLOSE THE GAME!
If your game is still running after you noticed progress lost, there might be change to receive working backup from the steam cloud.
  1. DO NOT close your game
  2. Turn OFF steam cloud saving under library -> dbdl -> properties -> update -> steam cloud
  3. Close the game
  4. Delete folder 381210 which you can find from:
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\YOUR_ID_NUMBER_HERE\381210
  5. Turn ON steam cloud saving under library -> dbdl -> properties -> update -> steam cloud
  6. Exit steam completely
  7. Start steam, it will receive your profile for the dbdl from the steam cloud
  8. Start the game and cross your fingers

Didnt work? There is still some hope..
Your windows could have Volume Shadow Copy feature turned on and keeping history of different file versions.
  1. Go to folder "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\YOUR_ID_NUMBER_HERE\381210\Remote\ProfileSaves\"
  2. Click properties of xxxxxxxx.profjce file.
  3. Select Previous Versions tab and see if there is any old versions of that file.
  4. If you do, select one and click restore.

If your game starts with EULA, DO NOT accept it and follow this:
  1. Turn OFF steam cloud saving under library -> dbdl -> properties -> update -> steam cloud
  2. If game is still running, close the game without accepting EULA
  3. Delete folder 381210 which you can find from:
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\YOUR_ID_NUMBER_HERE\381210
  4. Turn ON steam cloud saving under library -> dbdl -> properties -> update -> steam cloud
  5. Exit steam completely
  6. Start steam, it will receive your profile for the dbdl from the steam cloud
  7. Start the game and cross your fingers

HOW TO RESET ALL?
Sometimes your character gets reseted to level 0 which is incorrect.
If you have lost your progress and wanna do full reset to your profile, follow this:
  1. Turn OFF steam cloud saving under library -> dbdl -> properties -> update -> steam cloud
  2. Delete folder 381210 which you can find from:
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\YOUR_ID_NUMBER_HERE\381210
  3. Start the game, it will create new fresh savegame profile
  4. Turn ON steam cloud saving under library -> dbdl -> properties -> update -> steam cloud
  5. Close the game, it will send your new profile to the steam cloud


HOW TO BACKUP PROGRESS DATA BEFORE ANYTHING GETS LOST?
Its up to you how much playtime you wanna risk. This issue can happen to anyone and you will face it sooner or later. Ideally make backup after every time you have played the game.
  1. All your progress is saved in this folder, make copy of it to somewhere safe:
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\YOUR_ID_NUMBER_HERE\381210

If you wanna do it simple, here is one line command to backup your Dead by daylight progress save to your documents\dbdl_backup -folder.
No need to know any personal id's or anything, just use the command line.

You can create new shortcut to desktop by pressing mouse2 -> new -> shortcut and paste this line and give it name "DBDL backup". Its easy to click this shortcut every time you have played the game and it will overwrite your previous backup.

Make sure this all is in one line starting with cmd and ending to /Y
Check also that your steam install path is same as in commandline, if not, fix commandline to point correct path.

cmd /C cd "c:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata" & xcopy *.profjce %userprofile%\documents\dbdl_backup\ /S /Y


HOWTO RESTORE PROGRESS DATA FROM THE BACKUP?
Notice that this restore works only with backups taken by commandline mentioned earlier in this guide.
This will overwrite progress from your backup save on all steam accounts which is used to play Dead by daylight on your computer. All accounts have their own progress ofc.
  1. Restore files with command line:
    cmd.exe /C xcopy %userprofile%\documents\dbdl_backup\*.* "c:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata" /S /Y
  2. Restart steam
  3. Start game
  4. If steam cloud conflict will pop up, select COPY FROM LOCAL TO STEAM CLOUD

Commandline works when pasted directly to start menu or start menu -> run.
You can also create shortcut for the restore just like for the backup.

WHAT IF STEAM IS INSTALLED ON DIFFERENT DRIVE?
If you have steam installed on different drive and path, let say on E:\Steam you can use this commandline to backup:
cmd /C cd "e:\Steam\userdata" & xcopy e:*.profjce %userprofile%\documents\dbdl_backup\ /S /Y

And this to restore backup:
cmd /C xcopy %userprofile%\documents\dbdl_backup\*.* "e:\Steam\userdata" /S /Y


WHAT IS "YOUR_ID_NUMBER_HERE" ?
It is steam unique id number. Every steam user who uses steam from your computer, gets this ID number.
Go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\
If you have more than one folder, check under all folders and find most recent file date for the 381210\remotecache.vdf -file and you know your profile id number.

Also for future note:

If you do not want to lose all your progress in the game follow these steps:

Go to: C:\Steam\userdata\"yourSteamID3"\381210\remote\ProfileSaves\

Then copy the files in a other folder on your hard disk.
For example: DbdBackupSave

And enable Steamcloud Sync.

You should make this at least one time a week.

How many actually is experiencing this issue or am I just super unlucky?

What happened before it lost my progress.
I was in killer's lobby with 2 friends and one random.
Game was starting, I was launched back to main menu with my other friend and other one managed to end up to the game with 3 random people..
Next game was telling me about new season and did low down my rank.
Then my currenctly selected character (ACE) went to level 0, all others was level 1.

The devs say it's a small number of people being effected

The number keeps growing though as it's an unpatched bug released in patch 1.3.0

sign the petition I linked above, if everyone signs it then we will know how many people it's effecting.

It's also interesting that game is getting "mostly positive" on overall reviews. When filtered to english, game gets "mixed". So, is the game working fine for chinese etc peps or are they maybe buying these positive reviews?

Everyone who are experiencing this issue, write negative review for the game, it deserves that.

I hope I'm wrong but it could be hard to get steam users real names and emails for the petition.

The devs are aware of the issue and have stated it is wise to make a copy of your profile as the user stated above. They are not hiding. They realize it is affecting people and they are not happy about it either. It's not as if they want people to be frustrated playing their game.

They made it for people to enjoy it and have fun. They are working on getting the issues resolved as soon as possible.

As for them not having their own servers, they stated it may be something that might be doable in the very far future, but nothing in the works as of right now.

I can ensure that its not so fun to start all over again, I bet people rather stop playing whole game because its frustrating.

Shouldn't they inform about the bug with big warning screen at the game start or what you think?
People are not expecting this kind of issues especially when the game is not in alpha/beta state.

Tried to copy my friend progress save. Got it to save into the steam cloud but when game starts it will get wiped.

I heard that cheat saves are still working.. Like seriously?
You can't copy friends progress save which is about same as yours but you can use cheated full progress save??

Devs, do you even have clue what are you doing?

"Because our focus is on making money with dlc's and we can't even code simple server based progress saving, make sure you backup your steam userdata folder every day".

Can work. My way i fixed (if wipe bug with Eula window)

1. Decline Eula (devs implementate NO SAVES IF U NOT ACCEP EULA) game will close without save.
2. deactivate steamcloud
3. IMPORTANT: (i did it not pls make at this moment BACKUP FILE from save- i was only lucky)
4. start game- i saw my progress ( <3)
5. I bought something in bloodweb to force harddrive save on my pc
6. close game
7. activate steamcloud
8. start game

This was my way, but i dint create a save file. now i protect (i hope) because i make a save after every game.





I dont udnerstand why everytiem annoucement /pop up for Eula/patchnotes/new ways to shop pop up- and not a warning window everyday: "TAKE CARE MAKE BACK UPS FROM SAVEGAME- WE HAVE ISSUS- IF U DONT MAKE BACK UP WE CANT HELP TO RESTORE UR PROGRESS" is fair way. But i read only " they say in stream they say in stream"

DEVS NOT EVERYONE CARE ABOUT UR STREAMS- MAKE A INGAME MESSAGE THAT POP UP EVERYTIME SOMEONE START HIS GAME!

Everyone please tell your friend that if he losts game progress that he should NOT close the game when it happens before steam cloud sync is turned OFF.
More better, guide how to make backups.

This "progress lost" bug seems to be totally random and could really happen to ANYONE, even to you.

I tried to reset the game, but it didn't work for me. Everytime I restart the game, Meg is back to lvl 0
