Failout 4 changing the RPG genre for the worse
RPGs are not changing they are fading away. F4 has more in common with loot and shoot games like borderlands with only a token of what made the F1 RPG an RPG. That's the way of all entertainment when it hits mainstream. Just make everything sound or look or read much like everything else with only trace elements of whatever genre they formerly were before becoming famous. Each year, every game that hits the mainstream only gets harder to tell apart from each other than the year before it, and I think to myself that there is no possible way that this development industry could get any more grey goopish and homogenized, but they always seem to find new ways to make their games less discernible from the crowd all in the name of leaving no 10 thumbed idiot gamer behind.

Its a skyrim in another skin. This is the game Beth makes. It is not traditional RPG for sure. but I wouldn't blame Beth for ruining RPG, its not their faults people don't play traditional RPG like before.

When Bethesda came out with Morrowind they set the new standard for RPGs and they continued it with Oblivion and then revolutionized it with fallout 3. Skyrim was a large step back into the action adventure genre for RPG players and Bethesda continued that direction with Fallout 4. Hence the anger and frustration seen by RPG players and the sense of betrayal voiced by RGP enthusiasts.

My question is this:

If you could step into another dimension where Fallout 4 followed EXACTLY in Morrowind's footsteps (save for graphics of course), how would the sales be? I wager that Fallout 4 would not have sold half of what it did if the game followed the old-school mechanics.

Just as a game released today that mimics the original Everquest would not do nearly so well as EQ did. People have come to expect more ...ease of gaming... mechanics.

RIght or wrong, I don't know, but it sells doesn't it? Kinda implies its right.

If it was for people like you, we'd still be playing isometric turn-based combat RPG's. Get over yourself.

Read my post carefuly before replying. The games you listed are RTS, not RPG. That has nothing to do with my post.

They dont make rpgs like they used to. But to be fair I enjoy F4 a lot. Its not a rpg its a open world fps. And a very good one at that. Its more Far Cry 3/4, Borderlands or even S.T.A.L.K.E.R. than anything else. But the game it reminds me of the most is Rage. Just without the regenerating health and vehicle combat. Its obvious ID was helping Bethesda out with this one. You can see it in the shooting and the level design that is very similar to that of Rage. And I just realized this is exactly how I would imagine the sequel to Rage would be like(+vehicles).

Play on Survival with 1 on endurance if you don't like action.

Still plenty of good RPG's out there.

I think some RPG's might be tempted to make them more action based due to the rise of rpg elements being used in practicaly any other genre.

However its hard to find a good rpg like Neverwinter nights where you can build your character any way you want. within the dnd rules ofcourse.
