It probably had more to do with BE being a....lets be charitable and say "third tier" company with no particular track record of doing MMOs, taking on a project that would be ambitious for a giant company and doing it with crowdfunding. And using unproven pie-in-the-sky tech to cater to a very limited audience and coming out well past the time when third person shooters are a Thing. Past the elevator pitch of "Planetside but 40k", it was never a good, workable idea.
I was thinking that maybe there just aren´t enough people interested in FPS/TPS set in the WH40K universe to justify making a game like EC. The WH40K games that are coming out are all about single player or small co-op experiences, right? Maybe companies just don´t believe that theres enough players to justify making a MMO set in the WH40K universe.
I'm going to be honest, I'm a founder, but I only joined early 2015, when Nathan was already in power I believe, which means that I didn´t buy the game because I was expecting it to be a WH40K MMO. I bought it because I saw an improved Space Marine multiplayer (PvP) experience that was also pretty close to a Battlefield type of game, with the bonus of having my favourite race as one of the playable factions. In other words I bought the game, mostly, for what I saw and not what it could be.
However, apparently theres not many people interested in a Battlefield type of game, set in the WH40K universe, such as EC, otherwise this game wouldn´t have died like this. EC is literally the only FPS/TPS multiplayer PVP experience, with big maps and player counts similar to a Battlefield type of game, that we have, set in the WH40K universe. Yet the players and the devs just left game, as if there was no interest for this type of game in the market. Space Marine also offers a multiplayer PVP experience, but, content wise, it's nowhere near what EC offers. Gameplay wise it's subjetive, but I preffered playing EC (probably because theres a lot more multiplayer content and depth in here aswell).
as great as this sounds this would only have worked in an MMO, especially if joining space marine ment an actual commitment where not playing for longer periods of time would gradually lower your experience so that only the strongest stay at the higher "ranks" with which the best toys are kept giving that elitist feeling without barricading access to marines.
while on the opposite side of the spectrum Orkz would never suffer from degrading progress but need more people to band together in waves to achieve the same sort of goals.
eldar and chaos would be the in between
then you would label the different factions according to play style (so LSM = commitment, Orkz = casual, etc) which would attract the right sort of play styles.
or at least try, but sadly im no billionaire so i could never make this a reality but would love to if i could :(
there is a good amount of data available on what happened during EC's development cycle and not a single idea you wrote down would've worked within its environment.
you might be able to get away with it in a RTS game, but definitely not in a (competitive) shooter.
gameplay always > lore/fluff
Yes be pissed at the deceitful devs, but Games Workshop really need to step up to the plate and stop handing out IP licenses to any tom, ♥♥♥♥ and harry.
