This is correct. It is async, like Backpack Battles.

It's only "sync" if you play co-op with friends. Thought, your opponents will be async anyways.

You will be matchmade synchronously with other real humans that are playing at that time if they exist, but the actual playback of the match is not synchronous once the matchmaking is complete.
