I didn't play Steam remake so I really can't compare 'em, but I guarantee that the spirit of the mod is pretty close to that of Alien 2 movie and AvP coop mode. Also the mod provides such features as two official campaigns (and some fan made missions) with a modest role-playing system, four marine specialists classes and a decent arsenal with like a dozen weapon and item choices to pick for each mission. Oh, and a multiplayer of course XD I bet that guys from a former Black Cat Games did their best to implement all of the best features from the old mod into it's remake, so it shouldn't be much difference between them in terms of a gameplay... unless you want to command the whole squad of marines, which is the mod's feature.
I believe it's pretty what you requested. Have fun!
I tried Alien Swarm, but I can't get past the top down view. I don't know why, but I can't do top down. Cool game though. I wish they'd release a first person view mod for it though.
Descent looks cool. May have to check it out. Never ended up getting it because of the whole flying mechanic. But perhaps I'll have to cave one of these days.
Natural Selection 2 I have already, but for some reason I can't get it working. But I'm looking for more of a single player experience anyways.
And they don't necessarily have to be steam games either, fyi. I have been doing some digging online and I found a few I may have to try:
SHOGO: Mobile armor division
They're alive
Vivisector: Beast Within
Project Snowblind
Marathon Infinity
Requiem: Avenging Angel
Neuro
Kreed
Liquidator 2: Welcome to Hell
FireStarter
Gore: Ultimate Soldier
I know there must've been hundreds of games released inbetween 1998-2002ish. And sci fi space shooters must've been included in there somewhere. I'm trying to find more of the forgotten gems like AVP2. There's gotta be more out there.
Again thanks for the recommendations. Feel free to keep them comin'.

I love this game. Played it a ton back in the day. If you get it to work, let me know how you did because I think I may still have a CD of it lying around.
I agree about the Alien Swarm thing, too. Top-down isn't my thing.

Good review, got to agree with most of what is said in it. Played the game, pretty fun.

Actually, Marathon is a very old game made by the developers of the Halo series, Bungie. In 2005 Bungie released the entire game to the public as freeware, then also releasing the source code for the game in 2011.
