Do areas keep having a lot of up and down segments?
I just got to the first monster area (right out of the starting village) and it's just really annoying to navigate and I'm probably just going to not spend a lot of time in the zone. Though if every other zone in the game is like that I'll probably just shelf it for awhile. I don't mind dealing with this for puzzles but having to hop up and down just to clear a stage of monsters just isn't for me.

Well, every area has multiple ground levels. In most cases you'll have to traverse these different levels to cross the map, not necessarily to get to a pack of enemies.

There are multiple levels in every map. However, you dont actually have to kill monsters to move on (there is no "clearing a stage", you can actually skip most enemies if you really want to while outside of dungeons).

That's exactly what I said. You may have to go up and down to traverse the map, but you don't have to go on a killing spree.

Yeah I'm just trying to ascertain how finicky the game is. I like the actual dungeons but the first overland zone they throw you into is just irritating. If I can just walk through it like it doesn't exist then fine, whatever.

You should be able to get from one town or area or dungeon to the next without having to jump up and down too much. But you'll be missing out on a lot of content if you don't want to explore and you'll need to sooner or later to keep your level and gear up to date.

Eventually you really start developing an eye for how these passages wind through on a screen. One big tip. USE THE MAP MARKERS to remind you of where to get onto higher elevations. Saved me a bunch of time, that.

This. ^

The pathing in this game is one of my favorites of any game. Kind of a non-linear-linear setup is my favorite.
