Each element has 3 major arts and 1 minor art. Split between Melee,Throw,Guard, and Dash. The Minor art will always be a little off shoot from the middle Major branch of the tree. These Minor arts can only upgrade to tier 2 and are thematically counter to the "intended" way to play that element. Wave for instance is "meant" to be the primary guard element, which is the thematic opposite to melee.
This is in no way telling you how to play the game, just explaining the theme in the game design. As some of the "wrong" arts for each element are VERY powerful. Suck as the throw art for the flame element.
