Anyone managed to take down a portal without knights?

Just started a new game (again - those pesky bloodmoons!) and I've explored as far left and right on my map as I can. I've hit a portal at both ends now, and have found no stone shrine thing in between.

So no stone walls, towers, or castle knights for me. :(
Will the shrine randomly appear one day or am I doomed to wood barricades for the rest of this playthrough?

And has anyone taken down a portal with only archers?

Shrines are random and restart is a better option if you can't find the stone shrine. Personally I don't think destory a portal without knights is possible, after all you can't command your archers in which case they will just roaming around.

If you stock up on coins, you can run past a portal in order to find the stone shrine. It's not ideal, but it works if you do it fairly early then the portals don't spit too many creatures to defend. Make sure your horse is well rested before you go.

Destroyed 3 portals already at day 80. 1 portal left. I'm having hard time pushing back.

I once had a stone-shrine spawn behind the first portal. I had to run pass the portal (triggering it) and spewing gold after me, but at the same time I was able to save enough to activate the shrine and have enough gold to get me back home. :D

In the late game* the only way to destroy portals is to build tower in the portals vicinity (can only be done the day after blood moon, when builders will not trigger portal) that will force archers to go there and attack the portal. You will be constantly losing archers and spawning large waves of monsters defendind the portal.
So you must have super good defence with reloadable cata, hundreds of archers and constant buffs.

If you f up somewhere, you can lose.
* not sure what late game means, but at this point knight squad will be wiped by portal's defence without making significant damage. Although every arrow counts, if you wish to waste hours like that.
