gamepad buttons are all different and on screen numbers are displayed instead of buttons

So I use a steam controller normally and all is very dandy. Today I try to play and instead of gamepad onscreen prompts it is showing numbers for all the different buttons. To make it worse when I press the usual button on the controller it does a completely different action. sometimes the gamepad buttons show up and then go righjt back to the numbers for the actions. In options the gamepad is selectable but it won't save. Anyone with any ideas?

The steam controller gets messed up sometimes in some games, you have to wait for the devs to address the issue. For now I suggest you use one of the keyboard bindings instead of gamepad.

Last time this happened, the solution was to opt out of the Steam beta. Try that ...

Valve keeps doing huge updates to how the Steam controller works... makes you wonder if they released the hardware prematurely (The drivers aren't mature).
