Bug Reports v2 - Report them Here!
Read the known issues and solutions thread before posting!
Solutions Thread Here

Bug Thread v2
After the last major patch, and the move to FNA (with alternate XNA branch), almost all previous known issues are fixed, so i'm retiring the old bug thread and starting a new one. Read through the known issues list below before posting!
Old thread here.

Known Issues

  • Music not playing on some sound cards (Sound effects work fine)
This is an issue with the audio library we're using. Try moving to the XNA Branch (instructions in the known issues thread) - if neither work, the sound card might just be incompatible.
  • Crash on load with "System.UnauthorizedAccessException"
This means hacknet save write any files to My Documents, which means it cant save or load - so it's crashing trying to load the meta account data. Make sure Hacknet is running as admin! Locale the .exe file through steam, right click, and set "Run as Administrator" in properties to true.
  • Keys not inputting or holding down correctly in OSX
This is due to an OSX kernel issue that's out of our hands, that can affect people that use non-apple keyboards. The solution is to plug the keyboard into a USB hub! More details here:
    http://steamcommunity.com/app/365450/discussions/0/487877107141113462/?tscn=1454213751#c451852225134191354

  • Decypher and DECHead not working on Cross Platform Saves
Encrypted file decoding can break if a game was started on a different platform (mac/windows/linux) than the one it is being decoded on. If you're having trouble with this, try opening the save on the computer it was originally created on and decrypting the file there! A better fix for this is on the list, and in progress.
  • Hacknet Window is small and sits in the top left corner of screen
This can happen on some computers where Windows Magnification (Desktop Zoom) turned on. Setting it back to 100% should make the game run just fine. You can do this by right clicking the desktop, selecting Screen Resolution, and clicking "make text and other items larger or smaller".

How to Report
Please include screenshots of the background terminal and your screen for bug reports! If applicable, also include your save file (My Documents/My Games/Hacknet/Accounts) and any crash reports (My Documents/My Games/Hacknet/Reports). Bugs that are well documented, have screenshots, saves, or any other information, and can give me a lot to work off will be fixed first (and sooner!). Describe the situation as thoroughly as you can..

Thanks for all your help!
-Matt

Sorry to say, but there seems to be no "reports" folder in the specified area (everything about file saving and such is left at default)

It's not a huge problem, but I open up the game, it freezes for a bit, then I can click on "continue". The game then crashes shortly after starting the game.

But then I open it up again, no freezing, and the game starts normally again, as I said, not a big issue, but just a heads up and stuff.

I couldn't take screenshots of the background terminal, since... well, it closed out as soon as the game crashed. heh

The only thing I can provide is my specs:

Intel HD Graphics Family
Intel i5 quad core
6GB RAM

I hope I helped, at least some.

Hi L7vanmatre, did you try to run in window sized mode ? It can improve performances, but most of all, you could see what happens in the console. Try disabling Multisampling, too. Most of the tricks are in the "old thread here" link, above. Bye

Hmm, I still can't hear any music playing regardless of setting WMP as the system default media app. Other sound fx are playing back fine.

Win10 Pro x64 + Creative SB X-fi sound card. It worked fine when I bought it back in Aug. last year on this same OS / hardware combination; I'm not sure what happened.

2/10/16 - Update: Got the music working now. Yup, user error. My bad.

That'd be the FNA patch - you can get the music back like before by using the XNA branch - see the instructions thread at the top of the original post. I'll add it to the known issues list!

I'm getting an odd bug that could contain spoilers. Bug follows:

Whenever I run the command: > DECHead CSEC_encode_1.dec the GUI pops up Loading, then scrolls to Complete for all of the items. However, in the console, it infinitely posts "DEC Encrypted File CSEC_encode_1.dec headers: -----------Header Analysis Complete-----------

Am I missing something gameplay related, or is this a bug?

Win 10

Thanks!

I'm getting the same thing here, running on Win 7 64. Both Dechead.exe and Decypher.exe aren't working properly. Dechead goes into an infinite loop of "Header Analysis Complete" printing until I kill it and Decypher requires a password for all files, including those that were supposed to be passwordless. Idk if it helps but I also noticed that the Personal_Notes.dec and Lawsuit_*.dec files can be decrypted if I write it exactly like so: Decypher Personal_Notes.dec "DLeatrou". It will give wrong password if I write dleatrou or "dleatrou", has to be exactly like that.
Thanks, in the meanwhile I'll see if I can start over or run on a linux OS and see if something changes. Any hints on how to trace or debug this could do also. It's a hacking game afterall, just makes it a lot more interesting :)

Something is missing guys, I just solved that contract, and wasted my time. But the solution was easy ;) I thought "oh man, did you really miss that ???"
The only bug was in the brain ;) Try to take the problem from the beginning ^^

The command to navigate in the game is "cd". I don't think there's a s1 command in the game (correct me if I'm wrong :D) Maybe you should try "help" to list all commands with explanations

I'm having a hard time believing this is true. I tried running DECHead Decypher.dec on the employee's computer and still getting the inifinite printing error. I also watched someone's recorded session on YouTube do exactly the same thing and it worked first time. This is the first CSEC contract I'm doing, so is that a problem for doing it out of order? I'm at a loss.

I'm using the mv command here to move a file from one directory to another. Many times I've seen that it is successfully renaming the file to the name I would like it to be in the target directory BUT it does not actually move the file to that directory, instead it gives me a "file not found" error.

Octovision Tech - Intimidation Tactics will not start. After I accept it doesn't send the email to begin the mission. It will let me abandon it and choose a different one though.

Thanks for the report! This is on the bugs to fix list - I don't think i'll actually be able to "solve" the problem, but I should be able to have the game better notify users about what to do. The problem is that Hacknet's running in a state where it cant actually write any files to your My Documents folder for some reason - meaning it cant save anything. Try making sure it has admin permissions!
