This is where the thumbs up or down really sucks. I'd want to give this collection a solid 6.5/10 but theres no middle ground with steam reviews. I have to err on the side of caution and give it a thumbs up because its more good than bad.

There is something a little off with the games, and Im not speaking based on rose tinted glasses, I fired up my trusty NES and played MM1 and MM2 just to be sure I wasnt crazy. It feels like these games use the Wily Wars engine from the sega genesis rather than the original megaman engine. Its not necessarily a bad thing, but it takes some getting used to.

The best thing about this is they added a ton of additional content. Time attacks, special stages, and other stuff really makes the pakage deal worth it. The megaman games are just as frustrating and rewarding as they were when you were a kid. So if you want to take a stroll down memory lane, or get kicked in the nuts by an unforgiving game, this is the right collection for you.

I play a few mega man games when i was kid . i always want to play them all when i get older and the legacy collection was a good start .
but this is not just the 1-6 Mega man games . it's more

2-the museum : it have artworks and concept art for every enemy and boss in the game .
3-challenges . they are fun and if you want to put your caliper to the test to want to know how much skillful you are . try them .

it worth the money you pay . it more than few old games in it . it's a package rich of Mega Man history .

I grew up with the Mega Man games on NES, and I think this is a very faithful series of ports. You do have to get used to some of the controls being changed up, like the select button. But other then that, I didn't really find anything wrong. I hope this trend continues and we see more retro titles ported over to Steam. I'm surprised it's taken this long to get collections like this one here honestly. Anyway, for fans of the NES games or people that can't get their hands on the original hardware, this is worth the purchase.

It's Megaman.

I could've easily just loaded up the roms I have for these games but I felt I should buy it. Just to show Capcom and the people there who tried to kill off this franchise, that Megaman is the best thing they ever created.


It SHOULD have included Megaman 9 and Megaman 10. (The other "NES" versions)

YES, I know 9 and 10 weren't on NES. But it was using the NES graphics and the classic engine. Mega Man 7 and 8 were in 16 bit. I'd love to see them in this collection. But realistically 9 and 10 should've been included since they never got a proper PC release. Or just cut the crap and drop a Megaman Master Collection and put all 8bit and 16bit megamans including MMX in one release. Capcom could even keep up with their practices of leaving other games in the series out like Megaman 64 and Megaman Soccer. No one really cares about those. .....Right?

Each game is a direct port of the original, even with the same slowdown's that would happen on the NES. Even some of the graphical glitches. Nothing really too special included, aside from some challenge areas and achievements, not really worth 15 imo unless you're a big MM fan. Which I am..

Classic Mega Man's 1-6!~ Great....
But it would have been better if 7, 8, MM&Bass, 9, and 10 were in it too.

Before I go on any further, let it be plainly known that this collection is, for all intents and purposes, simply the six Mega Man games released for the NES, exactly as they were at release, with simple HD upscaling (so it looks good and has no screen tearing on modern monitors) and various treats for fans. It does not exist as some end-all be-all collection with tons of amazing extra features or all the games or anything like that.

it does not have:

- a huge amount of Mega Man games or even nearly all of them in the classic series;
- HD remakes or total overhauls of the games;
- any fixes or alterations to the original games; there is still slowdown when too many sprites are onscreen, all the bugs are still there (which can be seen as a good thing, especially with MM1's pause trick still intact) and spelling errors ("Wiley" in MM3, "Faild" in MM6, etc)

however, it does have:

- well-done HD upscaling that is smooth as silk and has absolutely no screen-tearing unlike any emulator I've ever used on an HD monitor;
- a very tight and lagless feel closer to playing the games on the original hardware or 3DS, which in fact was noticeable enough that it took me some time to get used to the gamefeel after so much time spent the touch of lag most emulators and ports come with;
- an absolutely ridiculous amount of concept and production art in extremely crisp, high-quality, high-definition scans;
- a database full of relevant stats, weaknesses, descriptions, official names and the original artwork for not only every boss but every single normal enemy in each game;
- customizable controls and comes with a built-in rapid fire button;
- save states, one for each game (and of course passwords work too);
- options for screen size and borders on or off as well as some neat stuff like a filter that makes the screen look like an old CRT TV from the 80s;
- a cute little jukebox that lets you listen to any music or jingle from any of the games;
- perhaps most importantly, a set of 50 different challenges presented as bits-and-pieces of the games' levels and boss fights, offering a new and unique challenge to players.

I will say that the challenges offer a bit to be desired, as many of them use the same level chunks and of course boss fights, there aren't enough that shift between games in the series (those tend to be my favorite) and you're not going to see any crazy effects like, say, NES Remix tends to add to the mix, which the challenge mode quite reminds me of. But all in all it's a fun addition that will definitely help anyone completely master the classic Mega Man series, especially if they can manage to get gold medals for each of them.

Overall, it's probably not everything that you wanted or were hoping for, but at $15 -- half the price of buying these same six games on 3DS or Wii U, mind you, and bound to go even lower on sale through Steam -- it's definitely still worth it for fans or newcomers that would like a high-quality and, well, more legal Mega Man experience on PC than playing the series on emulator. As well, it's going to be the smoothest, cleanest option outside of playing them on the original hardware or possibly 3DS, and it comes with enough extras (particularly the huge amount of high-quality original artwork and challenge mode) to make it worth the small price tag for sure.

But seriously, it's 2015, why is it so hard to release a collection with 1-10 & Bass, the Game Boy I-V and Wily Wars, at the very least? Seriousy dude the challenges in this that mix all 6 games made me YEARN for a new Wily Wars-like experience where you can mix abilities from all the games, uuugh.

Like most other people I bought it to show Capcom I have interest in the series.

It's Megaman 1-6 with some neat features added in like TV filters and an improved save system. The challenge system is somewhat amusing but just uses existing pieces from previous games. This would have been a lot better had 7-10 been included along with the arcade games.

The art galleries and instruction manuals are neat for the hardcore fan. But there's few things here you can't get with emulation.

Get it if you want to show Capcom your support or to have the convenience of Megaman on Steam. It's not a must-have though.

This game's greatest strength is its greatest flaw in this regard: It, simply put, emulates the NES perfectly. Texture flickering, frame drops, everything looks and feels exactly like any old timer recalls it. This is classic Mega Man, alright, in it's truest form aside from dusting off an actual NES and plugging it on a TV (Or Mega Man 2 on the NES Classic Mini).
This collection offers resolution and display options that allow these classics to be played on modern hardware with little worry, and a few touches here and there. It's a bit jarring to see so many anachronisms in tandem with modern flairs. The UI mostly works, it's flaws forgiven due to its retro flair. The old limitations plays an integral part on speed runners repertoire and in keeping with nostalgic expectations, but they also hold back the potential enjoyment of these games quite a bit. Someone playing these classics for the first time want to dive into what made these great at first, and if enemies keep popping in, the readability of the player's surroundings is brought down due to texture flickering, and so on, their experience may very well be tainted just out of "respect" of the original release (and to some extent, "laziness").

Visuals: 6/10 (10/10 if you had a NES growing up and remember it fondly)
Faithful to what they originally were, but it'd be better to have offered the option for a "Classic" and "Modern" style, one for the more hardcore-oriented and one for those who just want to play without being bothered with these anachronisms.

Again, like the visuals, exactly like they were on the NES, for better or for worse.
If you enjoy chip-tunes and a little bit of Rock music, the catchy, upbeat and memorable songs from these OST's will probably resonate well with you.
Sound Effects work as intended, complementing gameplay superbly, so as to allow everything to be easily perceived, understood and reacted to.
Some of gaming most iconic tunes and effects are faithfully represented here, and the limitations emulated here aren't hindrances to sound design as they are for the visuals.

Sound Design: 10/10
Work perfectly within the confines of the games, gives each stage and boss an unique feel, while leading nostalgic gamers down memory lane...

This is Mega Man's bread and butter, this is the franchise's very soul.
Challenging yet fair (mostly), quick paced, simple to grasp, perfectly designed.
This is Mega Man. You run, jump, and shoot your way through stages filled with enemies and platforming challenges, dealing with a Robot Master/boss at the very end. You then acquire that enemy's weapon, rinse and repeat seven more times. (Only 6 Robot Masters on the very first game, though).
You do that until you reach the final stages, beat some unforgiving bosses, beat all the Robot Masters in a Gauntlet challenge, then face Willy, and you're done.

Then time passes, and you do it all over again.

Not all weapons are useful and fun to use, but they can't be all as overpowered as the Metal Blade.
Not every stage will be interesting or memorable to your personal taste and experience, but the level design is superb, top notch, in the vast majority of these games.
Not every boss will challenge you, but there are quite a few that will make you abandoning all hope for long periods, only for you to feel one of gaming's finest hypes after *FINALLY* overcoming them.
Rush, sliding, charging shots, adapters, E Tanks, and other items and upgrades join the Robot Master's weapons in your arsenal through the games, but in the end, what really matters is that it's downright fun running, jumping and shooting your way through hordes of cleverly designed enemies while you fight for everlasting peace in gameplay that is as perfect as it was in the 80's, even if it does show a few issues here and there.

Also of note is, you can use save states for each game. You know, so you can save right before the boss and try it again and again as many times you need, without having to worry about lives and going through the whole stage again. Besides that, the only "new" addition are the challenges/remix mode. They're more of the same, so experienced players can deal with gauntlets and different contexts. Not that big of a deal, but they help keep it interesting for veterans.

Gameplay: 10/10
One of the forefathers of gaming in its timeless prime. An ode to simplicity, functionality, superb level design that is interesting, challenging and clever. One of gaming's most recognizable mascots became famous due to how much fun it is to simply control him and plow through the levels.

Princing
The full price seems precisely right for the amount of content and quality of the games therein, Mega Man 1 notwithstanding. On any sale, people even remotely interested are in for quite a bargain.
If you're an old timer, I really think'd be great if you could support this in any way you can.
Extra Content
All the behind the scenes pictures give an extra insight in the character design end of the spectrum. It'd be interesting to see item descriptions, stuff regarding OST or level design notes and pictures, but due to the fact it's been so long since these games have been released, it's easy to understand why these are nowhere to be found.
Speaking of OST, it's quite enjoyable and accessible to listen to it from the in-game player.
Achievements
To be honest, as of now I haven't hunted for the achievements in these versions, because I don't have an controller, only the keyboard. I can update this later, but from descriptions alone, they seem quite doable.
Crontollers
Speaking of which, controllers are pretty much mandatory for the full experience.
Everything said in the "Gameplay" section takes into account that you have your weapon of choice in hands.

If you're an old timer, I highly recommend supporting this new release. This and the Anniversary Collection for the sixth generation of games are the best way to experience these classics. Since this collection focuses entirely on the first six games, this is the superior option, in my opinion, to play these six, due to the focus on these older games, and all the extra content and challenge modes.

Let's be real here. The love letter to Mega Man fans was already written when Mega Man Anniversary Collection came out for the PlayStation 2, GameCube, & Xbox. It never came to Steam. If you can acquire that title, do it. Be warned that the Gamecube version did swap the A and B button placement which made the game harder for those familiar. Regardless, that set included more games, and everything was much more polished, included more features like remixed music, tutorial graphics, etc. Some may whine about it not being perfectly NES accurate, but the pros outweighed the cons.

If you don't have those consoles, then here you are. Legacy Collection. You must understand, the devs misled us on this one. They hyped this up as the end-all, be-all MM1-6 set. They talked about how they were remaking these games for modern machines while keeping pixel perfect accuracy and even re-inserted the known glitches, exploits, and flicker we remembered. Yeah, that's all there....because this is literally just an emulator. They didn't do what they said. They just made an emulator. The original NES ROMs can literally be read from the EXE at a HEX level.

And you know what? It's not even a perfect emulator. There's actually some additional slowdown here not present on a real NES. There's unofficial emulators that run better and can actually provide superior visual filtering or superior pixel perfect upscaling.

I'm pooping all over this title, but I have to remind you, especially when it's on sale for $7, it's still a good deal. These are some of the best NES games ever made. MM1 is a bit rough to suggest perhaps, but it's important to see where it all started. MM2 and MM3 will always be the fan faves but I'll always praise MM4, 5, and 6 for being worth your time, despite so many people overlooking them. They are much more balanced, and less glitchy than the first 3 games, even if the boss and stage ideas were less original or logical. The chargable megabuster divided the fanbase, perhaps because so many people had an OCD about needing to keep it charged and suffer the noise which it puts out all the time. If you break free from that and use your arsenal instead, you'll enjoy them more. All 6 games have outstanding music, as well. Yes, just as good as MM2's. They all grow on you. This has a soundtrack player accessible from the main menu too.

Now besides emulating 6 classic games, they offer you up very high quality scans of most of the original artwork that could be find in the japanese manuals and other sources. You can even extract those images from the game's data.pie file using WinRAR with the password P091uWEdwe4lI6StDNMNlkodPGvJ38bL3HW6t3BCMYdFi83FXKu7k0NsHP8caDKS.

The only other noteworthy addition here is their attempt to include something like the Endless Attack mode that MM9 and MM10 had. Here they remix segments from the MM1-6 games in random sequences in a time attack fashion. But guess what? These are still just emulating the ROMs. It's actually clever what they did. They essentially created a series of save states from the games to load you into various positions. You run and once you touch a portal, it loads another save state to challenge you with. Only during this portal animation is the game even putting out any original visuals, essentially as an overlay for the background emulation going on. At least these time trials do have online leaderboards so you can compete with friends.

So if you're going to be a good boy/girl and support Capcom and perhaps try to convince them that we still love Megaman and want to see more Mega fun on PC, buy this. Just know you're not getting the perfect experience as was promised during all the hype.

And Capcom, if you could bring over Megaman Zero 1-4 with the remastered CD soundtracks built into them, you got $50 waiting from me on day one. Do it.
