Black Mesa

Interloper was one of the worst gaming experiences I have ever had
I really enjoyed Black Mesa and the first parts of Xen, but I lost patience somewhere in the Interloper chapter – just endless climbing and riding conveyor belts with the same repetitive puzzles and combat climaxing in a slow elevator ride. I like the concept, but they should have cut the chapter in half, I just wanted it to end but it just kept going on and on.

It took me 2 hours and 15 minutes and I completely agree with the repetitive aspect, in an otherwise exceptional game (i think, started this years ago and just finished).

Long.

In my last playthrough it was the map with the second most duration:

Only topped by Surface Tension, but it was modded:

So that's not quite the proper comparison. :wellok:

All of the Xen area is too long, they made an act III into 50% of the game, when it should be accelerating.
Is it possible to skip these chapters? Is it like hl were you can unlock chalters using cheats, then start new game in another chapter and still get achievements?

"I just wanted it to end" is EXACTLY how I felt during this absolute slog of a chapter. Xen started off kinda cool with the alien world, a bit of platforming and exploration. But then Interloper hits and it was one of the worst gaming experiences I've ever had.

The section with the pumps was not fun. The gigantic, tedious conveyer belt section was not fun. The laser grid sections were not fun. The elevator ride at the end? Not fun.

And the music, ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ dude I had to turn it off. I am so glad to be done with this game.
I agree, it was too long and repetitive. You enter a big area thinking, this is it, this must be the final stage, only to enter another big area and more of the same puzzles. Apart from that, it's a cool game.

Interloper is a DRAAAAAG. It sucked in -98 and it still sucks, surprisingly even more now than then.

the whole of Xen is like that saying about game development "to make a good game make two games and just cut the bad one", but they like didn't cut the bad game out...

The whole Xen part of the game overstays it's welcome. The fatigue kicks in in Interloper.

I couldn't even be bothered to finish Xen and it sounds like Interloper has all the Xen problems but worse.
Same. I just loaded the Nihilant map with commands to finish the game since I already finished HL1 anyway, so not much lost I suppose.
I must be crazy... I loved the Xen stuff. It's not above criticism of course, but it's just so much fun climbing the massive tower you've seen since first arriving.
^i enjoyed bm interloper too.

however it's unpopular for pretty visible reasons, namely that it's a traversal-heavy chapter with moving platforms and belts. chapters like that, such as og hl's xen and residue processing are typically polarizing in hl. the fact it's long does not help its reputation.

besides it's not very "pretty" (at least really not in the way xen's outside is) and it ammo starves on several weapons while spamming rockets and uranium. it can get pretty indigest to look and play through.
