I genuinely dislike the new Xen stuff, especially the further you go
It was pretty interesting and neat to see the changes early on, then the padding began. That's really all it is, really nice looking padding. The game is at it's peak of intrigue and action when you go to Xen, slowing it down doing stupid stuff with plugs, wires and switches is just garbage.

Interloper is awful, this new level with all of these things you're doing with plugs, switches and jumping on moving elevators is the dumbest level design in the game and it doesn't mesh well with the overall game. It's just bad. I just want to get it over with.

Gonarch's Lair was really good, they should have basically just ended it after that, a small section in Interloper not the huge amount of dumb puzzles and platforming.

Correct. I've even written a review for Black Mesa and some of these questionable aspects you've described above.

I 100% agree with you the decline in quality is very apparent when you enter Xen Interloper was an actual chore I wanted to leave a negative review just for that chapter.
I liked it.
So let's compare findings.

You've posted opinion. Let's use data instead....

1. Overwhelmingly Positive reviews. Well, let's skip that one.
2. Steam Top Seller. Mmmm... another mark against your negative review.
3. Millions of copies purchased. If the game you designed sold more you're there! But no one can find data on the game you designed.

The missing element is the reason for all your complaints.

You sound like a paid shill. Get over yourself bud.

The game is TOP NOTCH all around until you get to the Xen levels that the developers made up for their version of the game.

90% of Steam reviews are ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ and the players never complete the game they gave a thumbs up to. Look at statistics.

The game is absolutely fantastic up until you get to Xen. It's very cool at first then it starts to show it's decline in both level design, combat and the dumb things you need to do to progress.

Maybe form your own opinion instead of living your life by Steam Reviews.
You prefer xen from hl1 that was basically floating green island full of random monsters?
I like the Xen chapters up until Interloper, it's not bad either but I feel like it should have been cut up into several different chapters, however it is supposed to be the penultimate challenge so it makes sense.

However I'll take it over the garbage that was Half Life's Xen any day of the week.
New Xen sucks, even worse than original. Visually it looks amazing. But gameplay is such a slog. You go from one cave to another cave and then you have endless amount of plants you have to interact.
I am still on part with testical monster and it already feels like I have been playing it for weeks.
Novelty of islands floating in nowhere wears off so quikly and then you just stuck in endless caves system.
Oh and why my character must get stuck on every twig and peble? You are running to make a big jump just to fail because slighty elevated rock collided with your shoe.

The quality starts to decline as you venture more through the Interloper? It was already declining the moment you left Black Mesa. The fun and fights within that research facility is all where the attraction is for me.

Half-Life's Xen chapters aren't bad. They are just boring and some parts didn't make sense but that doesn't mean its bad. I still remember the good old days where I was panicking in the factory being chased by angry grunts.
Zen is amazing compared to Half Life 1, an outstanding improvement with so much new beautiful animation, music and graphics. The puzzles are not hard at all, the combat is interesting and varied. All in all, Zen through-and-through are a complete and total upgrade, I can't praise it enough.
My only complaint is that it feels a little short, not quite enough content for my taste, could really have used some off-road paths leading down into some more beautiful areas and more secrets.

Combat interesting and varied? You mean fighting hordes of Houndeyes and dozens of Squids is varied? The only interesting combat happens starting at Gonarchs Lair because the entire level is a big boss battle with multiple things going on.

The varied combat you speak of is non-existent in Xen

100% agree you get stuck on little roots, branches and rocks constantly and can fail long jumps. Totally jarring coming from the pre-xen areas that were impeccable.

That is my impression of Zen, you seem very hell bent on chasing other peoples opinion, chastising them for having a different opinion than yours. Its almost like you're trying to bait people into a pointless argument about personal opinions, as if yours is more legitimate than others.

I love Zen, it is an amazing experience with lots of things going for it, the combat is sound and entertaining and I really enjoyed it.
I do agree... the first time playing Xen it was nice to get a moment of relaxation after all of those hectic chapters. But over time and upon replay, Interloper is very tedious and definitely sucks some of the fun out. That first Xen chapter also didn't need to be quite so lengthy.

But...that's half life. You spend plenty of half life doing things with plugs, switches, and jumping on moving objects. You and the other ragers just have the ADD. There's no way about it: if you actually find any part of Xen 'tedious', you fail the Marshmallow Test and probably life.

Just people expressing their opinions on internet forum. Why are you so triggered? Just relax, maybe play more Xen levels.
