What the hell is going on with the launch?!? [Official Update]
05 May 2017 Update:

"Is the game dead?"

Short answer: "Cadence is still coming, but the when is a very good question."

The longer answer requires some history about Cadence. From the first prototype, way back in 2013, I was grabbed by this little puzzle system’s habit of inventing its own melodies. It wasn't music, at least not quite yet, but the promise was there. Making music is hard. If we could sidestep some of the learning curve with clever game mechanics I knew we'd strike awesome. With incredulous optimism I thought we'd be done in 6 months!

But of course, game dev is also hard. How to turn this intuition into a real-life playable game was less obvious. In the beginning most of the work focused on the puzzles. Little premade bits where you fill in the missing connections to turn them into loops of music. It made for some fun gameplay, but the music sometimes felt a bit random. Once you’d solved the puzzles there was no reason to come back and play again.

And so, work started on the sandbox, a place where you could use the logical bits from the puzzles to let your imagination roam, and make your own music! A reason to keep coming back. Except as the sandbox grew, it became apparent that what’s good for puzzles isn’t necessarily good for an open and creative sandbox. As we added more features to make the music more expressive, it felt like a constant struggle to keep it consistent with the rules of the game.

The attempt to solve this contradiction is the reason Cadence sailed past every intended release date we set. Each delay created more pressure, and the extra pressure made thinking harder, causing even more delay. Once I realised that I was working everyday, but I wasn’t actually making any progress, it became clear how unhealthy the feedback loop had become. Something had to break, and that was either me or the project.

That break, came first in the form of contract work, and culminated with a move to London where I’m now working at Payload Studios on the physics sandbox game TerraTech. While obviously little time remains for Cadence, these massive life changes were the medicine the doctor ordered. TerraTech, for instance, is a great project to learn about what works in sandbox games, and I think more importantly, I feel optimistic about making games again.

Where does that leave Cadence? Well obviously there has to be a line somewhere, or else the world will never see it. I’ve still got a few more tricks up my sleeve I’d like try. If they work out you’ll be hearing about them soon enough. If not, well then there’s still a lot to enjoy about the game, rough edges included. Even if we release a game that’s not quite what I wanted to achieve, it’s still something I’m incredibly proud of.

But if I’ve learnt anything, it’s to not say when I think that’s going to happen. ;)

Thanks to everyone keen to be a beta tester. I think that's enough for now at least. Still no testing for a while I'm afraid

24 Aug 2016 Update:

Hello everybody! Thank you to everyone who has shown an interest in the game so far. I have to admit I've fallen off the radar a bit, and haven't been doing a good job of keeping everyone updated. The truth is I've been working on Cadence for a long time now, and during the course of this year I had a bit of a wobble. Everything is and will be okay, primarily because I'm taking care of myself - unfortunately that means I simply don't know when Cadence is going to find it's way to your hands. Sometimes mental health simply has to come first, but still I apologize for not being more visible.

Why do we need STEAM or other MEDIA sharks to put out a UNDERGROUND game?

or google what Underground stands for....

or just explain your reason behind your statement. its not productive just to insult something and not give reason or some way to make it better.

yep, im just picky and a number of my games came from discs i bought. and so what if its a DIY. do you not like to work for something? music is all about creating things, and thats what you do in cadence.

p.s. thankyou for reminding me to clean out my game inventory. it becomes a hassle at times ;)
p.p.s. and in answer to your first question...steam will help give him notoriety and he gets paid as well...also why do you use steam if you think its synonymous with "media sharks" <--- derogitory statement.
