What does the crane even do?

Yups a drill, though I find using your extractor on your suit more effective.. at the least you can get resources WHILE in a storm :P This is way more useful on the Arid planet where spike-like tumbleweeds fly by very frequently.

Yes, it needs to be researched first. If you have the head blueprint.. then you already have it researched.

Nah, it's pretty useless. The terrain tool is a million times better. The only real use would be if you were in a storm.

If you combine it with the truck and the truck storage, then the drill is way better, you don't have to mess around with putting out stuff from your backpack, it goes to storage as you drill.

Drill head is useful to mine Titanium/Lithium on other planets - which is impossible to dig with terrain tool because of black rock it is on.
Also stick drill head to front of car and watch it dig tunnel as you drive.

Very true. It is not really made for terran but for Radiated, Arid, Exotic, dunno about Tundra since I have yet to really dig deep into that terrain. I wish you could take trucks with you on a spaceship.. but, oh well. :P

The crane/drill combo is awesome for mining! Do the following:

1. Build a Truck chassis.
2. Build a Crane on the truck chassis.
3. Build the (large) storage on the truck chassis.
4. Connect 4 small storages to the large storage on the truck chassis.
5. Connect Drill Head to Crane.

Tow the above with a truck outfitted with a large battery on the front, a single seat, a wind turbine next to the seat, and small storage on the back. Drive up next to a deposit and get in the crane. Drill like crazy. All the material you collect will automatically go to the 34 storage slots you have on your trailer. Once one or two small storages are full, you can swap out with the spare storage on your driving truck to carry even more.
