On the other end of the spectrum, some people are so polarized they wont even recommend ED to a guy coming from No Man Sky.
It's more of a case of "Daddy Braben made a game for me and me only".
That's strange. They are quite different games though, so its hard to know if someone would enjoy it.
Same the other way, would someone who liked ED like NMS?
I've been tempted for a long time to play NMS, and i'm fine with graphics being cartoony and whatnot... but its a survival game, and i totally burned out on those.
Kids recently asked me to setup a new Ark server, which we hadn't played in years. So i set one up, spent one evening with them, but just can't motivate myself to play further.
They're similar enough to be compared ad nauseam. Seems people start being short on reasons to tell people to try ED tho when their opinion is asked. It's a bit sad.
This is the real answer to the OP's question right here.
As for why... basically this. You have people who get butthurt that the game has certain elements they don't like and because they didn't get their way, they think that no one else should play the game. Either that or they want to "hurt" FD by trying to convince potential players to steer clear because the game is "dying" and so is not worth getting into.
It's bad to make generalisation and what you describe sound a lot like a conspiracy theory, but it's true that rumours are hurting this game.
I think the easiest way to solve this problem would be for FDev to be honest, communicate about their plan, and just simply make a good game.
Damn you're good Planewalker. Can I have your babies?
Rumors won't hurt the game. Any of those who play it for any amount of time know it isn't dead. There are a lot of stories FD can weave into it and many that are ongoing. I dunno what happened with the Goids but it seems that has died down a bit. I'm trying to hit Elite in combat so I can do the Dark Wheel stuff. I'm not sure if the Dark Wheel in Shinrarta Dezhra is the same Dark Wheel that tried to find Raxxla but found another and then focused on it more than the former. There are also still a lot of permit locked systems and some near Barnard's loop and I'm not sure why. The Goids logo has pretty much been found NOT to be a representation of Barnard's Loop but rather an alphabet of sorts. Not all Goids have the same markings.
Colonia and Colonia part deux
Colonia also has a long way to go to become a second bubble and I wouldn't mind seeing another Colonia-type areas on the east side of the galaxy. The east side is like a no man's land although that is where I found Guardian sites by accident.
Planetfall types
Planet landings have not been fully developed yet b/c we are still missing lava worlds and high density atmosphere worlds, gas giants and Earth-likes.
Powerplay rework
I would also like to see PowerPlay get some TLC b/c it was built so long ago and the risk vs reward payoff now is way out of line with other things in the game. I also really do not like the revised BGS system states. I think they are too convoluted now and there are too many states and I would like to see this simplified a bit.
Update cycle changes, more real-time less weekly based
Change the galaxy on an update loop not based around the Thursday maintenance. It sucks to wait till Thursday to see how much you have altered a system state. I realize they cannot update in realtime but perhaps they could on a tick or timer. One week is too long.
Careers
Let me actually join a faction similar to Skyrim. Let me rank up in said faction, etc, etc. Base monetary rewards on your rank and so on. That would make me feel less mercenary and more a part of something bigger than me.
Hiring NPC wingmen
Privateer had this and it worked well. Hire wingmen to protect you while you mine or hire them to help you fight in a haz res. Cost to hire would be based on their experience and rank.
There is a lot FD could add to the game at this point. But right now Odyssey needs to be looked at. Its performance is a very mixed bag from planet to planet. I did see some better planetary terrain generation on other planets so I think they fixed the terrain gen. It looks pretty good.
At this point ED was a success. Anything they do is just icing on the cake. Also I could see them creating a sequel with a revised code base that could free them up to do some things that the original code base was not designed to do. Most platforms only last 3 to 5 years and ED is at 7 or so. It is impossible to design a platform that can respond to every new need you might have over a decade. If they were to create a sequel it would sell like hotcakes. And they know this better than anyone. FD did a great job. It isn't perfect but it is a good product. And it has been released whereas their competition is still in development hell. So kudos to FD for getting it out there and supporting it along the way.
(fine print on the last update patch mentions this)
Good suggestions otherwise imo.
Ehmm, no. xD
Feel free to send me an add if you wanna join our squad tho.
Played NMS on my sons PS4. It's not terrible... Held my interest for a few hours at least. Flying is a bad joke compared to Elite though. Feels more like being on a rollercoaster than flying a spaceship.
Played NMS on my sons PS4. It's not terrible... Held my interest for a few hours at least. It's not great either. Flying is a bad joke compared to Elite. Feels more like being on a rollercoaster than flying a spaceship. And as for the building side of things... There's a lot of games that do it better. Subnautica, Fallout 4, Space Engineers, Kerbal Space Program, Empyrion etc... Some of the scenery can be quite impressive though, if a little too cartoony for my taste.
Thanks a lot and much respect for what you're doing.
I'll wait for you. I'll be your Penelope, scrutinizing the Horizon.
Elite Dangerous isn't dead for PC players, and I don't see Frontier abandoning it on PC for a long time yet... they'll abandon it when it becomes financial unprofitable for them and not before I suspect... I wonder if they'll patch in offline mode or local hosted instances before they shut off their servers for good.
My only gripe with Elite Dangerous is that development is slower than glacial drift. I mean Hello Games have done amazing things over the past few years with only 26 employee in No Man's Sky than Frontier have managed to do with 745,... and all of it FREE, it does put Frontier to shame with their slow pace and the broken state Odyssey was in at release.
250% agreed. FD should be ashamed !! 1 year of Odyssey being out , and bug fixes are all you get ???? And no walking VR ??? That should be an easy fix. With out touch support. I would be happy with just VR and gamepad support. I only play this in VR and with a gamepad. But Hello Games has done leaps and bounds more ! Full VR support with touch support. No wonder FD stocks have taken a nose dive........like what are they doing all day??? Playing ED ?
