Original post :

I found the game pretty awesome. But ... I had no clue Ceres would be the final boss Oo
I feel like there are plenty things unexplained. I thought there would be other things after that.

Who is Ceres ? Where does she come from, why is she half human half demon ?
Who is Giro (not sure about the name, I'm talking about the mad scientist) ? What is his goal with the project exactly ? They wanted to prevent the "end of time", ok, but how exactly ? And how did they know there would be an end of time ?
I didn't understand why Ceres had to destroy the project to stop the curvature of time. What's the problem with that ? Isn't the key of time made to change the time ?
It seems like there is history about the dark ages. We learn about it a bit in the ancient time with the Magis, but it's very little information. Why don't we learn more about that ?

Etc. Really I was expecting an epic end, so I was a bit shocked. I didn't feel it was the end at all. I thought the credit would be a joke and that the scenario would continue after that ...

I guess there are clues in the game that answer these questions ? Or do they have to remain unexplained ?

Update
For preventing any question regarding the story that's already been answered, here follows a summary of what the community have understood and what is still unclear.
Many clues are given in the game, but not clear explanation. Therefore, keep in mind that what you'll find below are theories made by the community trying to link the clues between eachother and make it coherent overall.

If you need prooves about what the theories of this post, I invite you to read the thread (even though it might take you a lot of time !) or ask.

Here come the explanations about the story :

The cycle of time
Ceres talks about it at the end of the game, but what is it exactly ?
The game takes place in a universe where time repeats itself, again, again and again.

During the Ancient Times, when the Magi lived, the writtens from the Dark Age talked about the Great Disaster. The Magi were convinced that the Gread Disaster would lead to the End of Time.
Wanting to prevent the End of Time to happen, they created the Project. The Project is a machine contraining the time, forcing it start again over and over. The Time became an eternal loop, with the same events happening, the same battles, the same fate for everyone.
Kuro, whose name was G during the Ancient Times, succeeded the preliminary tests and so was chosen to maintain the Project and make sure the Time continues to loop.

There is no beginning, no end to it. A simple loop. "Past" events make the "future" events happen, and "future" events make the "past" events happen.

The eras
Because the Time loops on itself, there is no beginning, nor "before" or "after". Still, to explain the different eras and what happens during each of them, we will take the Ancient Times as our source.

The Ancient Times
The Magi are an advanced civilization and accomplish many things.
They create a new life form, the demons: 10.000 of them. They are stronger and live longer than humans.
They create the Project, forcing the time to loop on itself. They also create the guardians, storing the Nature's energy and thus alimentating the Project. They also create one particular guardian : the flying Guardian, named Tiki, who will later swallow the Anomaly.
They also create the Magiliths, magical stones allowing them to travel through time to gather information. To make sure they don't affect the flow of Time, they assign some rules to the Magiliths. They also create the Magilith Island (later called the Cursed Island) to be hosting the first Magilith. Being an artificial island, it fleets on the water.
Finally, they "create" the 3 legendary artefacts : the Stone of Time, the Key of Time and the Boreas Book. The Stone of Time is actually removed from the Anomaly, but not created, it was already existing. The Key of Time is created from studies about the Anomaly. The Boreas Book is actually a copy of the book Velvet brings to this era.
The Stone is somehow used to create the Project, but the game never explains how the Magis do it. The Key was made for a security matter, but realizing later its danger, they break it into 5 parts. The Boreas Book contains many equations they manage to understand, leading to the freezing of the south east island and causing the level of the oceans to decrease.
After finishing the Project, they send the book in the Anomaly with the Hyperion (a big cannon).
After living for 5 centuries, the Magi mysteriously disappear.

The past - Years 949 and 950 and before
This era exists around 2400 years after the Ancient Times, it's the past era. It's there that the war between the Empire and Demonia takes place. The Empire leads its troups to the demons camp, on the central continent, then attacks the demons island.
Magnus betrays the Empire and kills the remaining demons on the island. He goes to Demonia and creates new demons from the undergrounds of the city, the same way as the Magi did, planning to govern them and pull down the Empire.
Dalskin on his side leads the Empire's troups and beats Magnus, after many losses from both sides. The Empire's victory happens the first day of the year 950. That's what happens before Kuro and his allies changes these events.
With Kuro & co's help, they defeat Magnus before he creates new demons, preventing the bloodbath.
In both cases, the demon race is wiped out, excepting a few of them. The Empire rules.
A major event happening in the past is Kuro giving the Boreas Book to Largo, who will put it in the imperial library in Genova. Because the book is put away from the island, the island will melt causing the oceans to rise.

The present - Years 999 and 1000
50 years later, the 50 years of victory's celebration is here. But, in the first day of the year 1000, the Great Disaster happens. Kuro, not being able to escape his fate, activates the Weapon. Without this, the cycle of time would not be maintained. It cannot be prevented without the Key of Time.
The explosion creates an enormous crater, releasing an odd energy the humans call "Smug". The Smug is actually Ceres' powers which were stored in the Weapon and released during the explosion.
In the mean time, the Prophet is young. He wants to go into the house kept by a guard in Genova to launch a firework during the celebration. He calls it the Great Disaster.
Kuro, wanting to prevent this from happening, chases the Prophet. To do so he has to make the water flows in the sewers : the Prophet calls this the Flood. Because Kuro screwed his plan, he's called the Great Destructor by the Prophet.

The future - Year 1060
We're 60 years after the Great Disaster. Because of the Smug, the merchants grew powerful and formed the Council, replacing the Empire. They also create the Militia to maintain order.
The Prophet on his side has grown crazy since the events during his youth linked to Kuro. The Great Disaster has happened, so on the Prophet mind the Flood will soon happen, that's why he creates the Pyramid. He puts the Stone of Time he found near the crater after the explosion at its top. His actions will be written in history books and will remain through ages until arriving to the Magi's ears.
After using the Key of Time, the Weapon is erased from the Time. The events linked to it don't happen, meaning there is no Great Disaster ; Reno, Plum and Cherry couldn't seek for revenge by using the Weapon thus they don't die ; there is no Smug ...
The last and not the least repercussion is that Ceres recovers her powers. Indeed, because the Weapon doesn't exist, Giro couldn't have extracted her powers in it. Ceres then uses her powers to wake up Tiki, the flying guardian who was sleeping in the oceans after swallowing the Anomaly. Ceres later crushes its heart, making him crashing on the ground and thus releasing the Anomaly, at the exact same place it was during the Ancient Times.
Finally, Kuro puts the Stone of Time in the Anomaly, giving him access to a portal leading to the Project. After the fight between Kuro and Ceres, the Project is damaged but apparently not enough for preventing the loop of the Time, as we see the loop to begin once again. Ceres has failed.

The past, present and future eras are refered as the Dark Age by the Magi.

Ceres
Ceres is the daughter of Menos and Velvet. They gave birth to her in the past era, on an island at the very East of the world map.
The origine of her powers are unknown, but it may come from her being half human half demon / or because her parents travelled in time and thus were somehow affected by it. With her powers, she can open time portals, repel people around her and such things. Also, she keeps her memories from a time loop to another. That's why she knows so many things about the Time, even the things that are yet to happen.

Her fate is to prevent the cycle of time. To do so, she needs to stop the Project. According to Ceres, the End of Time may not exist and it would be in the best interest of everyone to take this chance to continue their lives without looping, rather than repeating the same events over and over.
Her fate is the opposite of Kuro's, who has to maintain the Project. She even says so at the end, that they were not meant to understand eachother but to fight eachother.

Before the use of the Key of Time, Giro extracts most of her powers and store them in the Weapon, when she's still young. But, in 949, wanting to interrogate her, he releases his grasp on her. Ceres takes advantage of this to create a time portal and push Giro into it, before fleeing from the laboratory.

After fighting against Kuro, she disappears ...

Kuro, the man with the multiple identities
G, Kuro, Giro, the old man in Windy Valley, they are all the same character.

Kuro 'originally' comes from the Magi era. He was called G.
The Magi were searching for someone who would maintain the Project. They would make some people do some tests to see who would be able to be the one. Kuro succeeded at the preliminary tests and thus was chosen.
To succeed in his task, he becomes Giro. By tracking a signal of a "dective model" (which we believe refers to Ceres), he manages to arrive in 947, which he knows is the era where Ceres is born. When he arrives in his laboratory, he 'does away with the man and the woman already living in the lab'. This is what is told by Giro's diary, and we believe it refers to Kuro and Fina who are sent in the Anomaly by Giro (more explanationg coming on this part).
In 948, Ceres appears in his laboraty and he captures her. He tries to destroys her but only manages to extract most of her power and store them in the Weapon.
In 949, when he releases his grasp on Ceres, she creates a time portal and pushes him into it.
He arrives in 999 and with all of his memories lost. He's found by Fina's father. Because he remembers nothing, Fina calls him Kuro. The events then happen as we play them, ending after the battle between Ceres and Kuro.

After his battle, Kuro is trapped inside the Project.
After waiting for days for Kuro to come back, Fina finally decides to get out of the Anomaly with the portal of time. She arrives in the past era, at an unknown date but that we know is earlier than 943. She's trapped in this era and does many experiments in Giro's lab, trying to find a way to get back to the present.
Years pass, and somehow Kuro gets out from the Project and then joins Fina in the lab.
In 943, they give birth to Sid (who later creates the flying machine). They live together for 4 years.
In 947, Giro arrives in this era, sends Fina and Kuro in the Anomaly. He also gets Sid out of the laboratory, and waits for Ceres to appear.

Once in the anomaly, Kuro and Fina manage to come back to their own time. They settle in Fina's village and have a daughter, which can be met in the future era.
We don't know what happends to Fina, but we know Kuro grows old in this era because he can be found in Windy Valley.
He is the one who puts the flying machine in the Anomaly (which is considered as 'stolen" is the game), in order to the time loop. Indeed, by moving the flying machine into the anomaly, he makes sure his future and past selves will find it there, and thus repeat history as he remembers it.
That's also why Old Kuro can be found in the Anomaly.

Note regarding Sid:
We know for sure that he is Fina and Kuro's son, but he also says that his father was a mad scientist that killed his mother. He was young when the events with Giro happened, so maybe he mistook Giro for Kuro (obviously because they look the same) and thought Giro killed Fina because she was sent in the Anomaly, therefore never to be seen in this era again.

The theory of the game is now finished. You will find below what is not explained by the theory.

  • Why does Giro not talk about Sid in his diary, but only of a "man and a woman" when he arrives in the lab ? If Kuro, Fina and Sid were still living in the lab, Giro should have seen and mentioned Sid as well.
  • Why does Sid think that Giro is his father (he says his father was a mad scientist) ? In the hypothesis where Sid thinks that Giro is his father because he looks like Kuro, he should say that his "father" disappeared in 949, 2 years after Fina's "death", and not in 947 when Fina "died" (because Giro disappears in 949 after being pushed in a portal by Ceres)

Unanswered questions
Even if plenty things have been discovered, there are still questions we don't answer with legit theories.
  • How many years is the Magi era after the future era ?
  • What does the year 0 refer to ?
  • Why is the Anomaly in every eras after Tiki dies in the future and releases the Anomaly ?
  • What does the Stone of Time do exactly ? We know it's useful for the Project, but how ?
  • Is the Prophet the one who makes everythink happen ? He's a crazy guy talking about a Great Disaster, The Flood, the 5 keys, The Great Destroyer... because of the events happening when he is young. What if saying it when he has the Stone of Time makes it real ? After all he is right about everything, even if it doesn't actually happen as he thinks it will.

Version FR

Le futur - An 1060
Ceres a échoué.

  • A quoi faire référence l'an 0 ?

Are the dark ages the present and future time ?
The Magis talk about a prophet that spoke about the "great destruction" : that's the prophet of the present and the future.
On the volcano island, they talk about an ancient civilisation under the water with a harbor, houses, etc : that's the present time with the pirates.
They also say that during the dark times, the oceans were lower, giving access to more continents. But later, the thaw would make the oceans increase. That's what happen between the past, presend and future times : the viking island melt and the oceans increase.

So I guess our time leads to the Magis, the ancient times then leads to our time, etc. That's what Ceres is talking about with the "curvature of time".

Ceres is the daughter of Menos and Velvet.
Spirale Aug 27, 2015 @ 6:29am
What does make you think of that ?

It's in the ending. There's a scene showing their newborn child and at the end when they are on the beach Ceres is there so she must be their daughter.

Oh I didn't even notice Ceres on the beach ... And about the baby I thought it was Reno ... x)
Thank you I'll fight Ceres again to see it.

And the house on the island (in the past) full east of the map is actually the house where the newborn is. That's even there that we got the Ceres card.

I'm still missing pieces about Giro. Maybe he's Kuro, after all the subject name of Kuro is "G", for the project. But is he really Giro, and why would Kuro do all this ? I don't get it.

I don't get it either why Kuro is being "controled" to activate the Weapon. And how does Ceres know all of this ? Her powers, ok let's say it's because she's half human half demon, but it doesn't explain her knowledge :/
Also how does she know Kuro before meeting him ? I don't think she knew his name when they meet in tle Grizzly mountain when she was younger.

I got 97%, completion, all main heroes and Ceres on beach.
As epilogue, Kuro wakes without memory. Again. (As in the beginning of game).

My opinion of plot:
Magi time is the most distant future in game. In short it's something like this: past (war with demons), present (explosion of weapon), future (Smug filled crater), distant future (Magi, Anomaly, and raised water level).

Distant future: Magi somehow learn that "End of Time" cataclysm is coming. Having no way to stop it, their scientists create "The Project". Which is Guardians, powerful beings who accumulate power for a very long time. I don't know what usage have smaller Guardians, but the biggest of them uses accumulated power to "Restart" known world, when the "End of Time" comes. But Guardians need powers, so Magi, using time travel, place Guardians all over continent.

Also, did you notice that Magilith island (Curse island), doesn't seem to be affected by rising water level?

And it's common opinion that Magi civilization was in past, it's because only 2 Magiliths were build in distant future, others were established to help setup "The Project"

From that moment "Evoland" world becomes looped. And from that moment it's very hard to tell what follows what.

Ceres: Ceres is daughter of Menos and Velvet. Why she has her powers? Well, in my opinion, it's because her father and mother:

1. Were time travelling.
2. Were in Anomaly for some time
3. Have Guardians merged inside them. (Second level of upgrading. Fire guardian for Menos, Ice guardian for Velvet)
So any of these or alltogether could cause her to have her powers.

Now about Giro/Kuro:
He is a Magi scientist, probably curator of "The Project" (He has access to core of "The Project", capsulated Guardians, including the biggest one, remember?)

What follows, is only my assumptions, based on some facts in game.
At some point of his working in Laboratory, he detects powerful newborn Ceres. He takes her to Laboratory, and starts extracting her powers into Weapon. Well, I'm sure he doesn't thought about it as weapon, just a reservoir for her powers. Probably Menos and Velvet were already dead at this moment, or they handed Ceres to Giro/Kuro themselves, because they knew that she couldn't control her power. Either way, in "past" we can see two graves near Ceres home.

In 949 year (past), Gyro/Kuro distracts for a moment, and Ceres uses her power on him, and escapes Lab. But since Gyro/Kuro is not ordinary human, he is not erased from Time, but transported to 999 (present), although loses all memories. From that moment game starts.

About Disaster (Weapon explosion). Magi somehow created artifact (Key of Time), which prevents time paradoxes by rewriting known history (before distant future). But when Giro/Kuro and Co tried to prevent Disaster WITHOUT Key, Giro/Kuro was forced (either by his own "mind safeguard" or any other Magi technique), to activate Weapon. When activating it, Giro/Kuro was unconsciously using his "end-game" ability to slow time, thats why he seemed to be very fast, and no one could stop him.

Ceres goal was to stop "The Project", because same events were repeating again, and again, and could be changed only by "Key of Time". So I suppose she wanted new, even if bitter future.

Hope I answered your questions,

Great analysis :)
I think you've figured out most of the things !

I'm not sure about the part with Menos and Velvet giving Ceres to Kuro though.
When you're in Giro's laboratory, we talks about "Subect X", who is I think Ceres, and he also says something like he killed the man and the woman. I guess the man and the woman are Menos and Velvet.

Also it seemed to me that Kuro was somehow created by the Magis, named "G", and he is the project.
At the beginning of the game we have to make a few tests, then the Magis say something like "he's the one", and BOOOM we wake up in Fina's bed. Her dad found Kiro in front of the Magilith in the forest.

I thought that the Magi sent Kuro at that time, but you you're talking about an ellipsis (not sure if I'm using the right word ... x))

Well, that means I missed part where Kuro says that he killed, but that's entirely possible, since he doesnt know any of Ceres parents at that moment. I highly doubt, that Magi would prepare Kuro, and then erase his memories, so I still sure that it was Ceres, who transported him in time, and erase his memory.

I love the idea but it doesn't work quite well for me ...
1 - Giro tried to DESTROY Ceres in 949, but only succeeded at erasing her powers. He says it as an hologram in his laboratory. Then, how could Ceres have used her powers on him if she didn't have them anymore ?
2 - The Empire is after Ceres. Why would they be if Giro wouldn't have asked the king to go after her ? Giro couldn't have asked this if he had been sent in 999 by Ceres.
3 - When we are in Genova, which is AFTER Ceres escaping, Giro is still there. Magnus talks about him to the king during the coliseum, at the same times he talks about the Weapon.

I think we're missing a part here, and it's might about Kuro being at first a subject for the project, as others have been before him (but failed at the tests). By the way you can find another subject who has failed at the tests. He's in the ancien times, on the island at the north east.

I've beaten Ceres again with 98.3% completion and her speech at the end of the batte is different.
Her last sentence is "I'll wait for you G", meaning she knows that Kuro was a subject for the project during the ancien times, and perhaps that he is Giro ? I don't know.

Two other things :
Who is the old man in the wind valley ? It seemed to me he knows Kuro in the future ("Ah it's you") and he's in the anomaly at the very end.
What happens to Fina after the final battle ? She waits for Kuro until she dies ? We see her dad crying, I guess learning the news. But at the very very end, we see her in Giro's laboratory tapping on the machines and POUF Kuro appears. What's the meaning of this scene ? According to the graphics it happens in the past (~950).
