It took me like 30 attempts on Normal to get past the 3rd level (counting the tutorial -I think it is called The Mines...) The next level is easier and I sailed thru the following two levels on the 1st or 2nd try.
Here are some tips- not that I am an expert or anything:
1. Concentrate on bit busting more than on enemy ships, except take out the fighters as soon as possible, particularly the ones that shot the wave pattern shots because they have a wide range. The fighters tend to drop bombs which are a great way to break thru the maze.
2. Move right thru the maze as quickly as possible. The object is to get past the bits, not shoot them or enemy space ships.
3. Try not to hang out at the left end of the screen- you will get trapped and crushed. I like to hover around in the middle of the screen, ideally with most of the bits cleared out of the middle for maneuverability. However if you see an opening ahead that may lead to open space then take it!
4. At the start of the level you may need to manufacture some matches- place a purple scrap here and an orange there, etc. to get a few match-4's. As you move right thru the bit wall look ahead see where are the biggest clusters of one color are. Then seek out that color. Hold the A button to fire your weapon to avoid picking up colors you don't want.
5. Don't forget to use morph as explained in the tutorial. I use morph as often as I shot a scrap to get matches.
6. The 2nd boss, level 4, does not take any damage from your guns. Pick up color scraps of the same color and shoot in its mouth to get a match. It takes about 5 or 6 matches to defeat it. It has a health bar.
