Why are some levels golden?
What does it mean if a levels icon has a golden bar instead of silver one below it?

It means you got all three gems for it, which means you completed it without losing any lives.

There are certain thresholds you'll want to hit for 'completion':

Finished the level.
Finished the level without leaking. (Gem reward).
Finished level with at least four runes equipped (Endless mode unlocked).
Finished level with at least six runes equipped (Achievement).

You can get all 3 gems if you only leak 1-3 lives aswell btw.. Gold means you didn't leak I think.

U can still get gold if u leak <=1. And I thought playing w/ at least 1 rune was also required for gold but I could be wrong about that.

I didn't know about the gem reward for 0 leaks and I don't know if u still get the gem reward for leaking <=1 but u definitely get the gold.

Also FWIW if u beat a level w/ 10 runes u will notice there is also a different completion icon for that (there's a little window or something at the top of the tower). Btw obviously there is no explicit achievement for 10 runes but ... there is 1 hidden achievement. Shrug.
Does endless mode count for the 10 rune thing ?

I don`t thinks so, because you need to finish the level.
