Steam Link
Controller compatibility list
Hello all,

I know that Samsung already has their own list of officially supported controllers that are compatible with the Steam App, which are:

The Steam Controller
Xbox 360 Wireless/Wired
Xbox One Wired
Logitech F510 / F710

However, I was told that it's possible to get other controllers to work, since they aren't able to test every controller that exists. So I'd thought I'd compile a list here to show which controllers are compatible with the app, and which aren't. I'm hoping that others who own different controllers can help contribute to this list as well. My TV model is KU6290, 65-inch.

Works:
AmazonBasics Xbox One controller - Tested by myself. It's not an official first-party controller by Microsoft, but it is officially licensed, so Amazon stuck very closely with Microsoft's specs when making it, so much so that it gets recognized as a regular Xbox One controller. Great wired, cheaper alternative. The Xbox Accessories app tells me that the firmware is 1.1.279.2

Logitech F310 - Tested by myself. I figured that since the F510/F710 are listed as officially compatible controllers, chances are the F310 will work as well. Lo and behold, it does.

Xbox One wireless via 8BitDo receiver - Tested by HandSlander.

Dualshock 4 wireless via 8BitDo receiver - Tested by raFaun

JAMSWALL Wired USB Xbox 360 controller - Tested by myself. I got this off Amazon, and I was actually quite surprised that it worked, since it's a third-party knock-off. I guess the internals are identical enough to the 360 controller that the Steam app recognizes it as one. However, I wouldn't recommend this one, since it feels quite cheap in the hands. But it does work.

PowerA Enhanced Wired Controller for Xbox One - Tested by myself. This one's another officially licensed controller, so I'm guessing that they stuck very closely to the Microsoft spec. Funny thing is, Steam recognizes it as a Generic Gamepad, rather than an Xbox controller. The Xbox Accessories app tells me that the firmware is 1.1.279.2, which is the same as the AmazonBasics controller.

Doesn't Work:
Gamesir G3W wired PC controller (interestingly enough, the TV does detect input from this controller, but it just jumps all over the place, making it totally unusable)

PowerA Xbox One Wired USB Controller - tested by HandSlander. This is interesting, since it's also an officially licensed controller like the AmazonBasics one.

ZD T Gaming Wired Gamepad - Tested by myself. Same issue as the Gamesir, it just jumps all over, making it unusable.

Xbox One S via bluetooth - tested by HandSlander. Is responsive, but not all buttons work and is temperamental. Works fine with 8bitdo receiver.

PDP Rock Candy Wired Xbox 360 controller - tested by myself. Funnily enough, it works on the menu portion when selecting a PC to connect to and the Steam Link settings, but once you open Steam Big Picture mode, it becomes non-responsive. I was surprised that this one didn't work, since it's officially licensed by Microsoft, while the knock-off JAMSWALL one worked.

PDP Wired Controller for Xbox One - Tested by myself. This one doesn't work at all. No input detected whatsoever. The Xbox Accessories app tells me that the firmware is 1.0.62.0

I think I'm done with my testing, I'll leave the rest to everyone else. I hope that those of you who have other controllers can also test them and report your results, so that other people with Samsung smart TVs can find this resource useful.

I would add Works: 8bitdo receiver.
Doesnt' Work: Xbox One S - connects via bluetooth and is responsive but not all buttons work and is temperamental. I can play Spelunky with it but not Rocket League for example. Works fine with 8bitdo receiver.

Awesome, thanks for testing!

Which 8bitdo receiver are you referring to?

Cool!

Does this dongle work with wired controllers, or only wireless ones?

I'm guessing that this little dongle converts an unsupported controller's signal into one that can be read and used by the Samsung TV. Does it work with all controllers?
the dongle is a USB stick with a button and that is it - so works wireless only. It supports all major console official controllers including Switch I believe. All the info can be found on the 8bitdo site which has the manual for the device.
XBox One S Wireless Controller, does it work with the official microsoft adapter (not the bluetooth adapter)?

Or this new version:

I want to buy a wireless controller, but I'm not sure if the XBox One S Wireless works. I'll probably have to buy an Xbox 360 Wireless, not an XBox One S...

I have TV model UN55MU6400GXZD

Apparently, according to HandSlander, the Xbox One controller can work wirelessly if you use the 8Bitdo receiver.
Has anyone tried to use the DS4 with the 8bitdo receiver?

I bought an 8BitDo device to use on the TV, at the moment I do not have a XBox One control to test, but it works normally with the PlayStation 4 control, I'll see if I can test one of XBox One before buying, I'll see if any of my friends has one to borrow for me to test, but PlayStation 4 worked without any problem with 8BitDo.

Cool, thanks for testing!
I read somewhere that Valve are going to stop focusing so much on the Steam Link box and are going to do more development of the app - hopefully that means improved native controller support in future :)

Cool, where did you read that? That would be really awesome if true.

I also think it makes sense to focus development on the app, since smart TVs are becoming more prevalent nowadays. Hopefully they could get rid of whatever is preventing the app from recognizing non-official controllers, and improve it to the point where it can recognize any controller a PC can recognize.

Also, I tested two more controllers:

PowerA Enhanced Wired Controller for Xbox One
PDP Wired Controller for Xbox One
See the OP for more details.

I got a Samsung QE49Q7F which does not support Bluetooth controllers, only keyboards. I plugged in a DS4 wireless usb adapter from Sony and my DS4 controller works perfect on the Steam app.
Pairing is easy; just press on the usb adapter to get in in pairing mode. Put the controller in pairing mode and that's it.
I also was able to get my XBox One S Bluetooth to connect to my 2018 Samsung Series 8 which has BT, but it doesn't work correctly, if at all. I have tried it with ESO and one other game (I forget which). Will seek a workaround, even if it costs a few bucks more. I really love getting rid of the physical box and its cables and I prefer this controller over my other options, as does my wife.
I've tried the Xbox One S controller using Bluetooth connection on my Samsung QLED Q7FN and it worked flawlessly. The controller was even able to control navigation on the tv menu.
