Steam Link build 688
We've just released an update to the Steam Link firmware.

Changes:
  • Added support for Steam Link Anywhere, now in early beta

Steam Link Anywhere allows you to stream games to your Steam Link from any computer running Steam, as long as your computer has good upload speed and your Steam Link device has a good network connection.

To use Steam Link Anywhere:
  1. Add a computer and select "Other Computer"
  2. Follow the pairing instructions on screen

This service is in early beta, and we appreciate your patience as we continue to improve the service.

Yeah, I was wondering that too. PC to PC?

Ok, so it seems for now, no Windows PC to Windows PC streaming outside of the home. If and when that works, that will be amazing. At least for now I can use my tablet or Chromebook when I'm on the go.
Exactly. If you can install Steam link, then you can do this. For now Windows to Windows isn't an option as of yet, so I recommend dual booting like Windows for one side for work, and Linux to do your Steam link, or you can even run VM to emulate linux OS, and get Steam link that way.

With the right repeaters in the right places... outside the home becomes a useless concept

Can you please specify what constitutes GOOD upload speeds?
30 - 50 mbits is what you need on LAN so I would assume the same applies to internet unless you want to sacrifice quality.

Can't install Steam Link if you have nothing to install it on. Thank you for stating the obvious, though.

PC to PC outside of the home can be done using the previous method of port forwarding and manually connecting via the Steam console. This has been an option for a long time.

Again, stating the obvious. The question is about doing it without needing to do it that way now.

Right. I know about the "unofficial" way. I"m just interested in trying the "official" way to compare and see if the results would be better. I'm curious to see if latency might be improved without needing to go through those extra steps.
Idk if I'd expect that, but just a more streamlined way of doing it. Maybe even without portforwarding?

Does this release contain the fix for the Marvell vulnerability in the WiFi chip's firmware?

Check again? I definitely have the option on Linux.

Does this require UPnP? It isn't working from behind a work network (no dynamic port forwarding)

Is there any sort of encryption at play here?
I'd be very uncomfortable streaming across the internet, even if it's a game.. I may alt tab out or such

Would my computer have to be on if I wanted to play away from home? Do I have to pair it before I leave?

Yes to both questions.

You can't Stream your game to you if your PC off.
You need to input the code on your Steam client in order to pair it.
