Oddworld: New and Tasty -- Xbox, PS4, Switch controllers don't get vibration
Hello there!

I'm aware that this is the Steam Controller forums (and the SC doesn't even have vibration), but honestly, I feel that cross-posting this here will reach more knowledgable eyes who may even be able to solve the problem without owning the game once they hear the description. Please find my original post from the relevant game's forum below:

"It's nice that New and Tasty has very helpful labels when you use the official Steam Controller Configuration for it.

Unfortunately, for whatever reason controller vibration is then also disabled.
EDIT: to clarify:
-Turning on Steam Controller Configuration itself does not deactivate vibration, BUT doing so with any of Xbox One, PS4, or Switch controllers makes you unable to do anything in-game (menuing still works).
-In order to actually do anything in-game, you *must* choose the official configuration for Steam Controller Configuration, and this specifically will deactivate vibration.
-Therefore, in order to have Steam Controller Configuration turned, you lose vibration.

I know this is an old game so there's an approximately a .01% chance this will be fixed in a new patch, but just thought I'd give it a shot anyways -- I've gotten lucky in that regard with another also old game. And hey, maybe there's a fix I can do myself that someone knows of.

Thanks for listening and have a good day!"

You can turn on Steam controller bibration on and off in the settings. It's called rumble emulation. Have you tried that?

Hello, thanks for your reply.

To clarify, I am not actually using a Steam Controller; I am trying to use any of the current-gen controllers (I'd be fine using any of Xbox One, PS4, or Switch controllers, and have tried them all and all have had this problem). 99% of the time I am able to use any of these (the latter two emulate an Xbox One controller, and even when using an Xbox One pad I sitll enjoy using hte customization features of SCC) without issue.

Oddworld: New n Tasty is one of those 1%, unfortunately, where an issue arises (and ironically, it seems to be because they went out of their way to create a profile in SCC).

I know but from what i understood you are letting Steam handle your controllers, hence why you are able to access the configuration software. And since Steam is handling your controllers i think there's a rumble setting somewhere.

Orher than that, disable Steam confifuration for non steam controllers and you shouldn't have an issue.

Thanks for your continued response.

The general vibration setting has always been turned on (I like vibration so I have never turned it off).

Perhaps I'm not emphasizing enough that I use Steam Controller Configuration without issue (and am able to do things like get vibration, make use of the analogue from the analogue sticks, get pressure sensitivity from the triggers) in dozens of games. It's Oddworld: New n Tasty specifically that has this issue.

As for disabling Steam Controller Configuration for New n Tasty, I'm afraid that defeats the whole purpose of my post, which is to get SCC to work with New n Tasty. As a sidenote, when disabling SCC the PS4 and Switch controllers won't work at all, while the Xbox One controller works but then I lose the customizability I desire from SCC.

I know what you're saying but i'm telling you disabling SCC for your controllers might be the only way to ge rumble back. If the game recognizes Steam controller it might be that they didn't include rumble bexause.by default SC has none. And if that's the case, there is nothing you can do, if you want to continue using Steam to configurw your controllers. It's the game's fault and needs to be changed by the devs.

On the other hand, disabling SCC will default your Xbox gamepad to xinput which the game will recognize and might work with rumble.

Are you sure the game has rumble at all? And what you are describing seems to me like the game's fault, not something you can fix.
Hawthorne 22 jul, 2019 @ 1:34
As long as the "official" configuration is not selected, then the game has rumble, yes (e.g. when you press the continue button in the main menu, when you jump into mines, etc.).

Based on comparisons to other games I agree that it is the game dev's fault for this issue, but given that a patch seems unlikely I was just hopeful for a workaround or something.

But yeah, it's probably hopeless, haha.

You can email the devs and make them aware of the issue. They probably didn't have anyone to test SC configurations and probably don't even know what's happening.

Well, I *finally* found a workaround for this. The issue is that when you use the Steam Controller Configurator with this particular game, to my understanding, this means you are using Steam Input API instead of Xinput, and the devs forgot to include rumble/vibration in that. Unfortunately, this means you can't use the useful features of the Configurator without rumble.

The solution is an app called "GloSC." You add this as a non-steam game, then launch this. This app will in turn send the inputs into Oddworld as Xinput, which means you'll get vibration, all the while enjoying the benefits of the Steam Controller Configurator, including being able to use a Dual Shock 4 or Nintendo Switch Pro Controller.

edit: oh, and make sure to force off Steam Input per-game for New and Tasty.

could you expand on how to get the vibration working with glosc?

Sorry for the late reply, but glad to see that you worked it out, and even made a video tutorial to boot!

this sure reminds me of PAC-MAC Champion Edition 2, another Unity-powered game (and uses an earlier version of Steam Input API when it was called "Steam Controller API") that has a similar Vibration issue as Oddworld: New and Tasty.

For PAC-MAN Champ 2: it was released two months before Steam Controller API turned into Steam Input API after adding DualShock 4 support , but I don't think they updated it to reflect that.

anyway, you guys do know that you can fallback to XInput/Legacy Mode without actually turning off Steam Input or using GloSC? That's how I did it with PAC-MAC Champion Edition 2.

Go to [Controller Configuration > Browse Config > Templates] and choose any of the templates you wanna go with. This is how you switch between pure Legacy or pure SIAPI

...assuming Oddworld: New and Tasty's Steam branch intentionally didn't include XInput/WGI Input library as a fallback like how Horizon Zero Dawn did it.
