Playing EA Origin Games w/ Steam Controller (Feb 7, 2017)
Hi all,

I'm an avid Steam Controller fan, and I have added all sorts of non-steam games, tinkered with my own configs, etc... I love it, and pretty much insist on gaming with it in a lot of situations.

However, I've had a problem with playing EA games. I have read a bunch of threads talking about Origin, and I have tried some of the tips for getting around that, but none of them seem to be working as of today (2/7/2017) when I've tried to play these three games (that I HAVE been able to get working in the past) on a new PC I just assembled:

- Star Wars Battlefront (Origin)
- Star Wars - The Old Republic (this has its own launcher, beyond Origin)
- Battlefield 1 (Origin)

Anyone played any of these games today or recently? What's your workaround?

And what keeps breaking this? I felt like for a while they just kinda worked on their own, maybe shortly after Valve updated the SC software to better accommodate "games with launchers," but now it's broken again... perhaps because EA has been tinkering with Origin? (I don't follow that much; actually don't much care for EA, except for a handful of games, these included.)

Any help appreciated. Thanks.

Bf1 work for me by disabling origin overlay.

I've played Battlefront, BF1, and Titanfall2 as recently as a few days ago. Have you tried compatibility mode?

Battlefront, i've added as a non-steam game and it runs fine, just set a template for steam controller.
Have set Origin client not to show origin after gameplay.

For swapping between Origin games, as client has to be fully closed off for it to launch, i've documented in below link what i've done.

If you own an AMD GPU, AMD's drivers come with an "External Events" service that interferes with the Steam's ability to attach its overlay onto Origin games, causing Steam Controllers not to work with them. Disabling this has shown to fix the problem and the controller works fine. Try this if you're using an AMD GPU.

Whenever I change the compatibility (press apply => ok) and start origin, the compatibility resets. Win10 Enterprise x64. I make sure origin is closed before changing the compatibility.
So it is not downgrading. :/

Any ideas?

Have any of you used this:

Works great with all the games I've tested it with (they work on desktop and on the Steam Link)... tried ME:A, SW:BF2, DA:I... it basically gets the games working with the Steam Overlay, so anything you could do with a normal Steam game, you can do with the Origin games (Steam Controller, Xbox One, 360 or PS4 controller being driven by Steam, etc.)

Once you follow the simple instructions, it seems as though it's really just an automated script to launch Origin, wait, launch the game, wait, play, exit game, wait, quit Origin... back to Steam... it's pretty seamless once you add all your games via that method... by doing this, you don't have to put Origin in compatibility mode or any of the other tweaking methods I've seen around

I will tell you what, I was at my wits end with the Steam Overlay (necessary for the Steam Controller to work) not popping up when I launched EA games from Steam. I disabled the Origin In-game overlay, and all of the other overlays that could possibly be interfering with it, and I zeroed in on a process for AMD video cards called "AMD External Events Utility". I disabled that and the overlay works fine now. It may not be the same problem as yours, but if you have an AMD card, it's worth checking out.

I'll keep these tips in mind.

Hey man. I've replied to you on multiple posts. Your approach, all your .bat files do with me is close Origin, which results in the game closing. Any tips?

Hmm... not really sure why it works for some and not for others... you might wanna ping nasourso on Steam... he's the author of the tool, he'd probably be your best shot and troubleshooting it
