[11/28/2015] ARK: Upcoming Environments and Holiday Gift Bundles

Hey Survivors!

Happy holiday weekend everyone! We’ve been working on a lot of new environment content that will be going into the game in the upcoming weeks, and we wanted to give you a sneak peak now that we are getting closer to the release. ARK’s Lead Level Designer, Damien Bull, has given us an overview of the upcoming Ruins, Ice Cave, and Broodmother Arena along with some tasty screenshots!

Ruins

The ruins play a key role in the ARK backstory, and we played around with a few looks before we settled on what became the final style. The ruins appear as if they are being consumed back into the island over a long period of time, adding a sense of mystery to their origin. The ruins were designed to be simple and versatile and with only a few small changes, really look like they live in the biome they are located. To make them fun to discover we placed some in obvious locations and others in some very difficult and well-hidden locations. In fact, some ruins blend so well with their environment it’s easy to walk passed them at just a few meters away!

Ice Cave

The ice cave is located in the heart of the new snow biome so we wanted to take the opportunity to make something really beautiful. The layout is one of the easier layouts to explore being more linear, but we offset that with the need for higher level gear and careful management of your stats. We also created a lot of really fun little jumping puzzles, but be careful! The penalty for misjudging your distance can result in great bodily harm or even death…

Broodmother Arena

The Broodmother arena is really what lies in the heart of the swamp. The arena layout provides players with the ability to attack from a lot of different vantage points catering to different play styles and strategies. The lair feels warm, humid and inviting but also terrifying. When you first enter the arena it has a soft, peaceful feeling - until you realize the warm light being emitted comes from spider egg sacks planted near the remains of survivor trespassers and their pets mummified into spider food!
