Successful T-Rex Taming! Tips to help beast-tamers.

So, a friend told me of some people talking about a Rex taming taking them 6 hours.

Figured I'd throw in some useful info that helped me tame mine in abour an hour and 45 minutes.

1: Use narcotics instead of berries on all carnivores - berries are less effective on carnivores, and more effective on herbivores. (Herbivores are opposite, use narcoberries instead of narcotics - since they eat berries naturally)
-THIS POINT IS QUESTIONABLE- Testing needs to be done, as it seems some of this was changed in the last few patches.

2: PRIME FRIGGIN MEATS. A good 10 prime meats filled probably half the taming bar. I lucked out, and downed the rex near an area with a lot of stegos and mammoths. The rex has a pretty big torpor bar (this one had 1400ish) meaning you can leave him for a good bit of time before torpor runs low, and hunt up some prime meats. (Though don't let any taming pet get below 50% KO)

-- have as much prime meat as you can before setting out to tame any large carnivores (cooked works well, though raw works best, but has a VERY fast decay time - store cooked primes on a herbivore pet, and they'll keep for about 3 hours)

----Carry a campfire with you if you intend to hunt prime meats!

3. Tranq Arrows - They're nice. bit expensive to make if you can't mass-harvest berries with a trike or anky or whatever, but a MAJOR boon for large carnivore taming. Probably necessary for Rexes and Carnotaur without exceptional luck.

4. FISTS OF FURY!
Melee damage rules - this isn't generally applicable for large predator taming - but for smaller creatures, and "OH CRAP!" moments, a judicious application of fisticuffs is often just what the doctor ordered. (See also, flailing madly)

Personally, I was a bit unprepared, since I didn't set out to tame this guy - kinda just stumbled onto him and had to fight for life with a slingshot and fists o' fury.

Slingshot broke after a guerilla battle, jumping between boulders and cliffs, and I had to hop around swinging punches trying to stave off death (well, I should say 'I fell off my perch, panicked and mashed jump and all directions while spamming punch'...)- ended up knocking him cold after a couple hits landed and I stood there stunned with like 3 hp screaming into my mic. "BRING ME ALL THE DRUGS! I PUNCHED OUT A REX!"

I'll post up some screenshots later - too tired after pulling an all-nighter levelling up the Rex... heh.

My revision: use a scorpion instead of tranq arrows. If you get the rex to aggro your buddy, you can stab its tail with the scorpion and it can't turn around fast enough to bite you before you run away (assuming it even tries to aggro you). It might be slower than using tranq arrows, but it will go down at 99.8% TE, which is a huge get.

If you lack a scorpion to use, another trick involves an argentavis (a pteranadon with high carry weight would work too...)
Step 1) Get a buddy with tranq arrows and a bow.
Step 2) Pick up buddy with the argentavis.
Step 3) Hover over the T-Rex/Spino/Whatever of your choice and have your buddy get headshots.
Step 4) BRING ME ALL THE DRUGS!

not true, last night I was taming another turtle so my other one wouldn't be lonely, I can for a fact tell you narcotics work way better then berries and cause waaaay less loss in taming efficiency. toward the last ten minutes of taming I ran out of narcotics and had to use berries, the taming efficiency dropped a full 20 ponits using the berries just to keep the topar high enough I could run around and hand pick more berries.

Use Narcotics on ALL Dinos - you lose less training effectiveness.

This is absolutely incorrect and wrong. You lost effectivenes because the dino got attacked. Neither berries nor Narcotics will drop effectiveness. Do more research before you try to debunk an old post.

if your taming a rex don't tame it in a freaking agressive area. & dont fist it because you'll likely kill it....i'v lost few this way i'v lost 2 albino's to a dam Trex that was 70+ feet away smell him & walk up & just oneshot him thru my other trex/spino...

Prime meat is a must if you wanna keep above 80%

Knocking one out can be rough. i did all mine solo at first with arrows as making 1,000 Narcs a day is easy just hunting for hour or 2 daily then using a stego for nothing but narcs that has 1k weight.

i will say this if your with a crew & you wanna really Tame a Trex with ease...

Get 2 Behm gates & make a bg giant box...get someone as bait to run in & you close gate....bam stuck trex then Tranq him out...then have a door set up to go in/out & enjoy the easyest tame ever

or Thatch a wall around him & put dino's all around the base.

i knocked my first 3 Trexes Dying....nothing but dying on my 20th arrow to see trex fall down 10secs later after i die is really rewarding.

however. Scorpian with nothing but HP can tame them easyer without worrying of death.

you could always have it chase to the base and have buddies shoot it from the top of your base and then watch youtube while it tames/starves (taming a lv 81 right now)

Bit old post but to be constructive: i got a hint to tame a carno and it worked just great: built 4 stone pillars and on top a hatchframe, then a ladder leading up. Lured the carno to this place and knocked it out with 8-10 tranq-head shots.
I guess if you build this tower a bit higher it would work for a t-rex also

Upgrade: i was lucky and the t-rex stuck in some stones, just for the records: it was lvl 2 and i needed 20 headshots of tranq arrows with a bow to make him sleep.
