Metal gathering dinos
so, im really wanting to gather more metal without having to head to the mountains/big metal areas, i've looked to see what others have said about what dino is best for metal gathering and everyone says its the ankylo, yet the item it collects the most of is flint, is there any other "best" metal gathering dinos or is this what im stuck with?

Dododex website/app gives a ranking of gathering efficiency by resource.

Look for the smooth round river rock to get more metal.
Yeah, Anky is the best for metal, but it also the best for flint too. Normal rocks contain mostly Stone and Flint with a small amount of Metal. When using a metal pick you will get mostly flint, and bit of stone and a bit of metal. When using a Metal Hatchet you get mostly stone some flint but almost no metal.

The anky count's like a metal pick, it will get mostly flint, but it will also get the maximum amount of metal from that rock. if you want pure metal, then you will need to mine a metal node with an anky for best results.

I hope this helps.

Happened to find myself down by the swamp the other day while gathering stone with doed and hit up some river rocks. Each was a high yield node (of stone with the doed) and they were packed tightly together, very efficient gathering. Something like 130K stone from that run with 4 argys.

Just think if you used an anky.

I'd have a look at the resource maps and if there's a place you can run to quickly on a fast mount with good weight, then harvest with a good metal pick from an alpha drop.

Yeah I probably would have gotten a good mix of metal, flint and stone you would think? But I was specifically farming stone and was surprised by how much I was getting from the river rock. For metal I've got a gacha, randomly harvest it with an axe, grinding drops, occasionally runs with an anky/argy team. I'm just playing modded SP and my metal needs aren't high at the moment, I'm working on a large stone base.

If your anky has 2-3k health and 230-350% melee damage (any higher and you risk reducing your harvest amount per node) it can easily handle the southern mountains and probably even the northern ones. You'll get enough metal for a full set of flack and a longneck on your first trip. If you have a good boat you can make several trips up and down the mountain consecutively and get all the metal you need for a while in one afternoon.

You need to hit the metal ore nodes, not normal rocks - grab an anky with an argy, fly close to the nodes - I get more metal than I can use [over 5.000 ore from a single run over the pillars]

The anky is definitely the best at collecting metal from rock/ore. If on Extinction, you can use a doedic to hit benches, lamp posts and tables for scrap metal. Killing Enforcers and Defenders also gives you scrap metal.

If you are on the Island and want to avoid the mountains, you can farm the mini-boulders on the beach. They are about the size of a doedic and give you much more metal than normal big rocks.

I like to get 2 high level ankys and mate them together and use the child to collect metal. When leveling up the anky, spend all your points in MELEE. They won't be able to hold much but you or a buddy can offload the metal into an argie. It is best to get more metal per resource than investing in any other stat. If you have several ankys, breed the two with the highest base-level stat in melee so the child can have the best melee stats of your collection.

I find that increasing melee doesn't change my total yield per node, but it is preferable to be able to one-shot all nodes. Changing between harvesting methods or animal does seem to change yields, some more dramatically than others.

I find that one-shotting nodes seems to actually decrease my total yield, and so I stop my ankies at about 350% melee.

breed tec dinos and get them killed after hatch/birth, like a auto farm - if afk to get more metal over time and xp for the killers
just a hint for afk, I guess all live harvest styles gets more metal

Interesting. I'm on SP settings with unlimited level gain, my anky is somewhere over 3k melee and doed around 6k. Raised yield and node health. Overall it's balanced.

i dont normally deal with the breeding part but that's mainly because i like taking long trips away from my base for gathering/dino finding, and thanks for the info about the extinction part but my so called "gaming" laptop cant handle running the map and crashes the whole game before i can load in
GrimmHyde Apr 17, 2019 @ 6:45pm
very surprised i got this many replies in such a short time lol, thanks for that, i'll just take the trips with anky/argy since that was brought up more then once, thanks everyone
