Too many enemies crashing the game
I think the NPCs have figured out they can escape their electronic fate by banding together to blot out the sky and set my CPU on fire. This image is about an hour in on easy mode.

Does the game crash all the way or does it slow down a lot? That doesn't look like that many ships.

It can crash it. It is a lot, especially when (for me at least) it decides to use all it's boarders and board other ships then go to the next, and the next, and the next...to board my ships eventually, causes massive fps drop to 1, then crash. Barely could play the game at one point. Later on it calmed down and they didn't do that but still was ridiculous.
For context I have an i5- 10600k and radeon 5700xt, so not exactly outdated hardware either.

i've had similar issue with boarders. is there a way to limit the number of boarding troops the ai can use? because they lag the game so much that it becomes unplayable even on 1/4 speed and crashes the game just from 2 or three of their ships.

Of course. Check the discord. In bugs and suggestions.
Unless you want it here? Tho idk how to put a vid on my pc here and all that...but yes, check the suggestions and bug section of the discord or dm me, either on steam or discord.
I sokve this with nukes from mods
it just vaporises some stacks and you can play normally for some more time. The problem is that it seriously affects ai economy and i can not get some Final battle staff. Would be better if AI didnt use such stacks and just used extra ships as reinforcements

Apparently, Zark will fix this. Or a least, that's what he said in the discord and that he will "list it as a priority issue", if I remember correctly. Check suggestions and bugs report in the dicord and scroll waaay up. eventually you'll see it. Must have been last week or so.

Sorry for the long reply wait time. Didn't understand the steam community system well enough to notice anyone replied. This would permanently freeze my game requiring a Ctrl+alt+del and a new game to continue playing. A "No alliances" mod and avoiding big worlds stopped the issue. I've come to absolutely love the game since then.

Apparently it’s been somewhat fixed. Look at latest update. Has to do with boarders.

As of the new Beta, the AI still will spam out enough cheap, awful ships to cause the game to drop to ~1 or less FPS, and on rare occasion crash the game. This is both game-breaking, and also incredibly unfun since it's a slog of killing dozens of the same ship with no effort to doing so, only to lose to ammo, coal, or millions of tiny damage ticks

I recorded with OBS since the replay would've been made with heavily modded ships. This does happen in vanilla though, just less commonly. Still a severe problem (though I have a thread up that covers a possible fix that adds tactical depth to the game at the same time)

also pre-warning that it's a 15 minute video of about 11m+ of one or two frames, interspersed with 1/4th speed, 2FPS or less combat
