Also, have you read through the 'Help' section of the escape menu? I know nobody likes to RTFM anymore, but this game has lots of mechanics so it might be a good idea to give that help page a look.
Also when recycling the "recycle all miscellaneous materials" button is a huge time saver, and to save you a headache down the road, use an broken oxygen generator and broken thermal regulator in the research machine before you start recycling them all. ;)
To exapnd on this statement, pay attention to the items that say 'researchable tech' in orange letters. If it says that, you should try to save at least one copy of that item for research until you can do so. Some items that are more advanced might require higher software, so you might have to hold on to some stuff for a bit. But in the beginning, until all the central areas are cleared and you're exploring sectors further out, save anything that has that in its description card until you can dump it into the research machines.
