Race Customization.
I have a quote from back in 2015, and wanted to ask the devs, and start a discussion, about it once more.

Hey Dekeon,

It's possible to mod the races and add your own races and race artwork to the game files, but right now we don't have a way to customise races easily in-game as a game mechanic. We do plan to add a points-based race customisation system and hopefully the ability to use custom artwork or make custom factions in-game. If you're not 100% sure you want to pick up the Early Access and help with development without these features implemented, I would suggest following the game and keeping an eye on the development updates we release to see when the feature is added.

Is this still going to be a feature in the 1.0 release, or soon thereafter? Or has it been canned?

I'm curious because it's one of those small things, that I really love in a game like this, to be able to make my own customized faction/race, so I'd like to see it happen.

Definitely support this request.

Though I guess balancing this type of feature can be quite a lot of work...

Can we get an update, given that 1.0 is so close? Is race customization going to be in 1.0? Soon after? Or is it canned?

I can hear the crickets.

Hey Sethfcm,

Apologies for not responding to this officially yet, we've had a lot going on lately and this is actually a discussion that we've been having internally for some time. There are features that we wanted to get into the final game but we just haven't been able to budget the dev time to commit to yet, and unfortunately custom races is one of them. Making custom races will require a new user interface screen for race design, significant changes to the saving and loading system, and a ton of balance testing to determine point weightings. Allowing custom artwork would be even more work.

I'm a huge fan of custom races and recall spending long nights debating Master of Orion II race picks back on Usenet and forums, and I wouldn't be happy for Predestination to just never get that feature. If we do manage to budget the dev time before the final release to add custom races, we'll definitely do it. Otherwise, we will endeavour to release this as a free update after launch in the same way that plan to do with some of the other features that didn't make the V1.0 cutoff such as local multiplayer.

I hope that this doesn't disappoint too many people, but I'd rather be completely honest and open on issues such as these. Please do let us know if you have any feedback on this, such as how much it would influence your enjoyment of the game and how high it rates for you on the priority scale for a 4X game's feature list.

Cheers,

Sounds great to me. :)

And yes, balancing propably is a major point here - I still tend to wonder how they got it so well in MO2... ( after all it is linked with the entire game - techtree etc. )

Thanks for the response, it's better late than never.

As for how it rates for me well I'd give it a solid 8/10, it's pointless if the base game isn't good, but with a great game like Predestination I really would love to see it. As for 4x games in general I'd say it's a 10/10 feature for me, some kind of customization either of races or leaders is essential to me and I haven't really played a game yet that didn't have it and that I actually would recommend to my friends.

If it ends up being a dlc or something that'd be acceptable in my eyes, provided it was done right with a low price, or extra features bundled with it.

Agree to most of these points, although I consider Sword of the Stars 1 to be a very good game despite not having this feature - still would have liked to see it there, too.

Actually, the Suul'ka would've been a pretty good plot-anchor for such a feature ( they were originally only known for creating the Zuul, after all ) , so I initially hoped to see it in SotS2, but no luck there, sadly. :/

I admit I did enjoy SotS 1, but unless a game is truly exceptional I'd say it's necessary.
Ah SotS2, now that's a title that makes me sad to even think about.
