Star claims proposal
So level with me Nyphur.

Currently, star claims are done via diplomacy screen - you get a list of stars, and no reference map against it.

It would be way better, if you actually implement a "star claim view" to the galaxy map, so you see what you are actually claiming - instead of checking the star map, remembering the star name, going to right diplomacy screen, and making a claim from a very BIG list with no search function.

Hell, the star claim galaxy view could simply grab the star(s) you want to claim and move you to the diplomacy screen with that star(s) added to the pool automatically.

What is your take on this?

Always, ProcDrone :D. And apologies for not getting around to this suggestion sooner, we were very focused on V1.0 and then my dad passed away soon after, so we've let communication with fans slide for a few months. But we're back to development again and I've been systematically going through everyone's feedback and suggestions as we enter this period of heavy gameplay iteration.

What is your take on this?

There are quite a few +1s on this idea, so it definitely seems popular. Right now star claims are issued between two races and require the other party to agree to them, which was relatively simple for us to implement but obviously has some shortcomings as you've pointed out. We're planning to do an iteration pass on this feature before release, so I'd definitely like to get a discussion going on it. Here's my take on the idea:

Star Claim View: - This should be relatively straight-forward to implement, though it will require us to add a few more buttons to the galaxy screen UI somewhere so we'll have to think about where they'll go. Maybe around the End Turn button? Maybe we could add the planet map options there while on the planet screen too? We should also add a little icon in the System window if a star system is claimed.

Quick Claims: - I like the idea of being able to open a star system in the system window and immediately see whether it's been claimed, and perhaps issue a claim from there using some kind of shortcut button. The trouble here is that claims are currently only between two races, and if we want to do a quick shortcut that opens diplomacy we'd need separate shortcuts for each race. That'll be a pretty clustered UI and you'd have to go through the effort of getting all the races to agree one after the other if they're all in range.

Universal Claims: - One potential solution is to make all Star Claims universal instead of with a single race, which would require us to flip the Star Claim mechanic on its head. Instead of asking the other races to agree to the claim (and potentially having to trade something for it), you would simply declare that you claim that system and all the races would have no choice but to accept. Nice and simple, but of course there has to be a cost to claiming a star system to prevent you from just claiming everything in sight.

Balancing Star Claims: - The obvious solution is to simply limit all races to a certain number of claims on uninhabited systems. All systems you currently inhabit will be automatically claimed, and you could have maybe 3 or 4 claims on uninhabited systems. We could then give some races (like the Zloq) a racial bonus to star claims. An alternative would be to keep the claim system entirely within diplomacy, so you could have as many claims as you like but each one would reduce your rating with other races by 10 or 20. Each AI would also have a rating for how much it respects the sovereignty of another race's claims, so the Zloq for example would colonise your star systems without a second thought but the Renegades would be more cautious.

This is where I'd love to get your feedback, both in terms of whether the new proposed Star Claim system is better and how it should be balanced. We've committed to iterating on this before release as it's a pretty compelling part of diplomacy, but we need your feedback to guide it.

Cheers,
