Can't get the first crystal soul to train melee

My characters are L28 and I kept all my wizards' melee level at 8, so I can train them instead using skill points. However, the only trainer requires the crystal soul to be returned and I am unable to retrieve it. The fights in Angierach and in the Ornotha are too hard (I'm on Tormet). What should I do? If I level to 30, do I need to use the skill points or can I just get the level increases/health increases/free attribut points and try then? Or can I get the third crystal soul and it's in some easier location? (Don't know where though) Suggestions welcome, I kinda feel stuck.

For future reference: I was able to kill Limoncelli at 28th level, which revealed the location of Crystal Soul in Pyrog's lair. I was able to complete that task and in the process get one of my characters to 29 level, get back the crystsal soul, train melee and then advance the 29 level character. All good now.
