Manually activating the drone

I just want to share a little grievance of mine.
I didn't know that you can manually activate your drone (wake it up from its sphere form). The game only writes: use-Y (Xbox 360 controller). So I just shot it with Y and when it landed (or bumped against a wall) it activated (opened) itself. I play without walkthroughs and guides. When I found some higher secret ledge I tried shooting the drone so that it would fall on the ledge or bump against something above it - and when it falled back I just steered it in the right direction. Some secrets was so frustrating this way that I left them behind. And then:

There comes the top golden door of Kur. I tried many times to find the right angle to shoot my drone to the top of the barricade (because there wasn't a thing above it to bump against). But I was unable to do so. Finally I looked at some walkthroughs. They just said:
drone-clone to the door. And I thought: OK, I got it, but HOW - it is impossible to shoot there or at least very very frustrating. And finally I noticed in a reddit forum that you can activate the damn thing manually in the air so it isn't necessary to bump or find the right angle. And it was a piece of cake after that. But I am a little disappointed that I had to resort to a walkthrough for this crucial information.

You mean the game actually made you wonder how to manage something? The horror! YOU HAD TO THINK!

No. I mean that I simply didn't know that it is possible to open the drone in the air, because it opens by itself when it lands (so it wasn't necessary to open it manually). It is not a riddle, it is an incomplete information. For example I used jump+teleport together because I did now that these are existing things in the game. But about drone opening - it only seemed an automatic process.

So I never pressed Y again after I shot the drone (until it opened and I wanted to change place with it). And I never even would have tried it beacuse there wasn't a reason to believe that it will change something. When I stucked at Kur I simply thought: there must be an ability that I didn't found yet or a designated place to arc the shoot perfectly.
And for example the Nova gun has a full instruction:
"Firing once launches a large projectile; firing again causes it to detonate."

Hey thanks for the info. I didn't know that either and was wondering how to get to some of those secrets. I thought I was missing an extra ability for the drone or something...
