What am I missing here?
I find I'm spending 80% of my time mining for ice for fuel, and even that seems to be an overall negative return.....

the price for hydrogen at stations is cost prohibitive as well... I can't make enough of anything to sell to be able to stay positive on fuel.

What am I missing here?

Currently balance in the game is not very well, it will be fixed in the next update. Until then you can:

1. Create new world and set fuel consumption in advanced setting to 0.5 or something like that.
2. Enable sandbox mode and spawn more fuel in cargo containers.
