[BUG Fix] Character save corruption - maybe XD
Edit: This is a fix for if "save_auto.bin" has the wrong value in "Default weapon" and is not actually corrupted. This happens when editing your inv in co-op and a mission starts and sometimes also happens in SP.
Also
There is a way to get back some of your data. If your save is actually corrupted look at the second fix.

While playing with a friend today I experienced a crash when he loaded a mission. (when he clicked start the mission I was playing with my weapons and gear) I tried using the backup save but nothing worked I following the troubleshooting guide too. I found out it wasn't my progress that was corrupted but my character save. What happened was ( In save_auto.bin ) my "Default weapon" was set to weapon "W4" but there was no weapon in "W4" slot so I changed it to "W2" that had a weapon in it. And BAM fixed! Here is how to do this all you need is 7-zip and Notepad++.

FIX
Step1 go to C:\Users\DustyComputer\Saved Games\Flying Wild Hog\Shadow Warrior 2\profiles\steam_000000000000000\1

Step2 open "save_auto.bin" in 7-zip and extract "bin"

Step3 open "bin" in Notepad++ and see if your "DefaultWeapon" is set to a weapon that is not equiped and change it to one that is.

Step4 save and replace the "bin" file in "save_auto.bin" with your modified one and try to use your save

Actual corrupted save Fix -kinda
Corrupted save vs. Normal save when opened in Notepad++

User - "But Dusty my save is actual corrupted and when I try to open it in 7-zip I get an error and in Notepad++ it's just null what can I do?"

Dusty - Did you know all those extra files like (save_auto_level_quest_018kmh.bin) and others in the "1" folder are actual Saves? They are made every time you finish a level.

Fix
All you have to do if your "save_auto.bin" is corrupted is find the last file (aka the one with the largest quest number at the end) that is -not corrupted- and make a copy of it then delete the original "save_auto.bin" and rename the copy "save_auto.bin"

AND Bam! You got most of your save game back. I helped one guy that had 23 hours and he said he only lost 30mins or so of game play. He was kinda happy.

IF newgame+
It is a bit harder. You need to look in the file for the last mission you think you did in SP on newgame+ and look at you weapon wheel (W1-W8 values) and make sure that's the last save you used. Most of the time you can also just pick out the largest file (in KB) which will have the most data and is most of the time the last save from your game.

Unless you just sold like all your gems before your save got corrupted. It might not be the largest file anymore so be careful.

Hope this helps someone that might be having the same issues as I was.

All good info besides the file path of Step one. For me it was: C:\Users\backt_000\Saved Games\Flying Wild Hog\Shadow Warrior 2\profiles\steam_76561198041489546\1

PS: Thanks a lot for saving my savegame :D

A mod should sticky this. Also, if this fix works it ought to give the devs some ideas about a permanent solution to this problem.

@jordyexists - ya maybe they will I also sent them a email about it :P

Also I have been helping people fix actual corrupted save's. {aka cant open it in 7-zip or in Notepad it's just null strings} If anyone has actual corrupted save's and has more that and few hours in the game and dosent want to restart. Add me and Shoot me a message and I will try to help you get it back. (Help one guy get back 20+hours)

Praise be the community. We are currently working on a permanent fix for the saves.

@Hashmailum

Woot
I also had to modify the progress file too (you will know you have to if you are missing a character slot at selection) and rename the corrupt level saves (I just renamed everything for saftey reasons, could probably delete too) Thanks for the tip!

This worked for me and fixed my save file. I can load and play my old game now. Thanks so much for figuring this out, DustyComputer. You've saved me a lot of headache and being concerned about data loss, which I really do appreciate. Next round's on me! :B1:

That path is the same as what OP posted... Obviously the Pc's username and the save folder string will be different, but the path is indentical.

When I First posted the guide on Oct 16 @ 5:09pm accidentally listed one of the saves I had moved to my Desktop that I was working on in notepad++ (C:\Users\DustyComputer\Desktop\1) is what I had listed XD It was my fault I was trying to get the guide out as fast as I could. You should have seen it the day I posted it was a mess. I am not the best at making guides. I have done hmmm at least 6-8 edits to add info and correct spelling. I am happy that the guide is helping people tho.
