Alt+tab and/or Steam overlay
I know this game is broken on Steam, and I know everyone is confused thanks to the random updates that Steam is rolling out for it.

But I'm just curious if anyone has had any luck 1) getting the Steam overlay to work with the game, and 2) making it possible to alt+tab out of the game (further details on this below).

As for the Steam overlay, that's a little less important to me since this is an old game, and there probably is a fix for that right here on this forum. But I think the alt+tab problem came about with these recent updates.

Prior to the updates, opening the pause menu would force the game to windowed mode, and it would go back to fullscreen upon exiting the pause menu (as I'm sure most of you know by now). After the update, pausing still causes a bit of a delay as if you're transitioning from fullscreen to windowed, but the pause menu IS in fullscreen now. I admit that I don't remember if I was able to alt+tab before the update (I don't think I needed to, since I'd only be alt+tabbing while paused, and being paused put you in windowed mode), but I certainly can't alt+tab now while in-game. And that's the main problem I'm here about.

Has anyone else been unable to alt+tab, either before or after the update? Not having the Steam overlay in a game is fine as long as you can alt+tab. But if you can't alt+tab, either, then...

The "pause" is because it's switching resolution, the menus are still 640x480 regardless of what you're playing at in-game.

They added a compatibility profile that disables alt+tab. However it is possible to re-enable it.

1) In order to do that first go to the game directory and rename JediKnightDarkForces2.sdb into JediKnightDarkForces2.sdb.old (or simply delete it).

2) Then download this archive DELETED and extract it's content to the game directory.

3) Run Uninstall.bat with admin rights, this will uninstall the old profile (not the game).

4) The last thing you have to do is run installer.bat with admin rights, this will install a new edited profile that allows alt-tabbing. (Without a profile the game would probably not work properly.)

In case you want to restore the original condition rename JediKnightDarkForces2.sdb.old back into JediKnightDarkForces2.sdb and repeat steps 3 and 4.

This fix worked wonderfully, although the issue deepcut mentioned about menus remaining at 640x480 resolution is still quite apparent, especially when alt+tabbing (my desktop ends up being at 640x480).

Thanks for all your replies, by the way.

Try out DgVoodoo2, that gets overlay working for me and even allows such things as Steam Home Streaming and game watching to work. It also allows "Use Hardware Acceleration" to work, if you prefer less blocky looking textures

Extract the dlls from the MS folder into the game's folder.

Very nice. Steam overlay is working (in-game, not on the pause menu, but I won't be picky). I haven't tested the other fixes it's supposed to bring, but I'm less worried about those. Thanks for the link.

If you want it working on the pause menu, you're going to need a non-Steam version of JK.EXE; they seem to have altered the menu ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ a bit recently

Just remember that non-Steam JK.EXEs don't have CD checks disabled, so you'll need to then find the no-cd file called JK_.CD.

I'll have to try this out. Thanks for the link.

(Edit: Click on 2015, then on Jun 19)

In case you're as annoyed as I am that with that file the game launches in a window, use this exe instead.
