Personally, it is my favorite game of all time. It has about 30 hours of gameplay for me in a single play through, but I do everything by reflex since I've played this game countless times. There are different outcomes based upon conversation choices. I'd say it's better than Mass Effect 1 and definitely better than Mass Effect 2. It all depends on your taste for specific RPGs.
My personal opinion....
*Mass Effect has better graphics
*KOTOR has better story and writing
*Mass Effect has much of it's game play based off the old KOTOR games
*If you dont mind older graphics, KOTOR is a tiny hair better then Mass effect
*I would HIGHLY recommend playing KOTOR if you never have before
*Make sure to look up and download the mods for KOTOR before playing
*Watch vids over on youtube to get a feel for KOTOR before buying
*KOTOR 1 & 2 are always in my top 10 best games of all times
It is a turn based game. It isn't tradition turn based. BioWare themselves described the combat as "real time turn based" during their dev videos when they were making the game.
I posted a forum in KotOR general. BioWare is currently developing an untitled Star Wars game on the Frostbite3 engine. Could be a remake, a new Star Wars IP or a KotOR III. Let's hope.
It is really important that the mechanics behind how the system works remain a mystery to avoid players trying to "game" or "cheat" the system. It's only when players are ignorant of the consequences of their actions can they truly make a free choice.
The story branching is a lot like the ME series, but I honestly like the KotOR series MUCH MUCH more, despite the slightly slower gameplay.
The story feels like it's better written, the worlds and the atmosphere are amazing, your choices actually feel like they matter (Dark side has some ♥♥♥♥ed up ♥♥♥♥ man)
Never felt more like a Jedi in my life.
If you like RPG's in any form, you'll like this game.
