Disappointing...
Since playing it on Steam, it was surprising for me to see how much of a disappointment it was; I wasn't expecting it to be brilliant or anything, but just a decent ride to kill some spare time. Nonetheless it was still disappointing.
Mediocre shoot 'em up...
Star Wars Starfighter is basically a mish-mash of repetitive space combat gameplay, mediocre graphics, a cliché-ridden story and awkward controls (the Y-axis is inverted by default and you apparently can't change this). If you're a truly dedicated die-hard fan of Star Wars - you can put this aside and just engage in exploring the Star Wars universe in loving arcade fashion. Also, if you like early Noughties 'nostalgia', warts and all, then yeah, you could well too have some fun playing it.
Only play it 'cause it's from my childhood, but it's not all doom and gloom...
The only reason I play it is because it's from my childhood, and trust me nothing can take that away from you, no matter how bad the game is: I just love the game and love playing it and nothing can change that. And, on a slightly positive note, the worlds are quite fun to explore. There are a couple of missions that will stick out as being 'more like it' as well.
Verdict: probably don't buy...
Basically - don't buy it expecting good space combat game. Expect a watered-down arcade space shooter that misses so many opportunties in gameplay, with the only universally notable positive asset being that it's set in the Star Wars universe. You might have some fun playing, but if you're uncertain about buying it, my advice is keep your money as you're not missing out.
The end.
Chances are - as previously said in this thread - it's not for you.
I want to emphasise that this isn't a 'stay-clear-of-this-rubbish-it-is-a-total-failure' game. It really isn't. It's just a mediocre game that you'll only really enjoy if you can put up with its downsides and fully appreciate its good points.

Hope that helps :D
Either way, remember...
The Force will be with you, always.
Trying to do the story and bonuses on hard is basically torture in that old school unfair kind of way designed to pad the game out with cheap difficulty rather than with engaging content.
but if you like ground battles too, get Star Wars Battlefront 2.
