Suggestion: A way to gracefully exit Endless Mode.
I had an Endless Mode round with a friend go waaay long last night.

T'was pretty epic, really, but it ended very unsatisfactorilly; with me entirely unable to control nina, between frame skipping accelerating the game and the massive piles of speed and jump ups, I was entirely unable to navigate the twisty nightmare of Agnisort, and just wound up kamikazeing repeatedly into the lava until I died.

We had known, for several matches beforehand, that things were going poorly and we probably should quit, but we didn't want to intentionally kill ourselves off.

I think Endless Mode should offer the option to gracefully exit after beating a boss, taking a teleporter back to the Ark instead of going on to the next boss, after level 8 or so.

There's an End Run button in the pause screen. Also, you don't have to take every speed/jump aug you come across.

We didn't want to End Run because that felt more like alt-F4ing than a graceful finish.

And not taking every speed/jump aug? What heresy is this! GOTTA GOFAST!

The problem was more that Agnisort is just brutally insane and impossible to navigate on extremely high difficulties. Well, that and the frame-skipping, but that was probably because I skipped huge areas and left lots of mobs loaded in and dragging the game down.

What's the difference between selecting an option through a menu, or walking through a portal for essentially the same thing?

The only difference I can see would be being able to see your scoreboard, but in that case, asking for a scoreboard when selecting to exit the run on an Endless run would be a better idea than a duplicate option that would only appear after level 8.

The difference is that the "End Run" option feels like "give up and quit," whereas going through a portal is an extended victory condition, lets you see your scoreboard, and not feel like a loser.

It could make sense to include a "Victory" option whenever the game pops the "Endless Battle" or w/e that portal is labled, so you can retire after any complete cycle. And since, if my memory serves, the "Endless Battle" portal is always alone since it is rolling over to a new set, ergo you start on a pre-determined enemy (as it would be when you're starting a game), though it does make the "Endless Battle" thing feel less like a... Skull since I feel like those are supposed to make the game harder? Though I suppose that's a matter of personal taste/choice/w/e (like the Longer Levels and More Enemies thing being also great for gearing up with ALL OF THE THINGS)

your fate is written, your death is inevitable.

give up and quit,or face endless struggle.

every stage you step, step closer to death.

there is no victory, but only infinite fail.

Capitalization and correct usage of the spacebar are your friends.

Also, no, infinite fail is not what we experienced. We hit a critical mass where enemies were simply not a threat to us, and bosses were almost as threatening as normal enemies used to be. The only reason we died was due to our computers becoming unable to handle the number of active enemies and coping by frame-skipping, leading to our characters becoming uncontrollable. Even then, if we hadn't wound up in Agnisort; literally any other stage would have been survivable for us.

So, no. We didn't lose, the game became unplayable. I would have liked to gracefully end before then.

Your request is like asking for someone to build another set of doors directly next an already existing set of doors -- when there's still 20% of the house left to be constructed.

Ultimately I'd like Endless mode to have an end screen when you select to end a run -- but I'd prefer that no matter what the mode is, not just endless.

Either way, you say it's an "ungraceful" way to exit, but why? That's literally what the option is there for -- to end a run, anywhere you want, for any reason. Whether that's at the beginning of a stage, the middle of the stage, or at the end of a stage -- like you want.

I mean, I doubt it'd be too hard or take too much time -- but both time and resources are not infinite for just two developers; and there are so many things infinitely higher on the "to do" list to make a second exit because you're too stubborn (I'm not using that word as an insult) to use the first one for some reason; like fixing the game so it doesn't become unplayable like it did for you and your friend in the very first place.

On a slightly different topic, if you do find Endless mode to be too easy after a while, simply put more skulls on. Wrath (receive double damage) is a very good one to keep the difficulty curve in check alone for Endless mode, but you can add others if you'd like as well. Hopefully that will keep you satisfied and you may never need to exit or be bogged down due to a run's duration, as you'll probably be killed off. Feel free to add more like maybe Bankrupt to slow down character growth.

FWIW, we're currently planning something kinda like this - once the game's final challenges are in, I'm planning on changing the end-area teleporters so that one continues the Endless Struggle (in Endless Mode only), and one sends you to the endgame. (If you've played Risk of Rain, think of it like that.)

Pffft, what LOSER doesn't take the Safe Laboratory Voucher in stage 1 and then indiscriminately grab every Prototype Aug until the upsides start canceling each other out to the point where you have only 3 units of HP, an energy bar that shrinks with each use, and weapon and power damage values permanently locked in at +0?

...I'm no loser. >.>

Any chance for a Save & Quit option for endless run like the standard modes have?

Doesn't this already exist? (Unless you started Endless via a seed, anyway.)
