Can't cast find familiar as bard?
I scribed it into my bards book, memorized, rested... And I still can't cast it for some reason?

You can assume I am completely newbie in the d&d universe as to how you answer the question, as that is pretty much correct to assume so ;)

Thanks beforehand!

EDIT:
Just discovered she cannot cast any spells... What am I doing wrong?? I memorized Identify aswell, but cant cast it :(

Does it have something to do with being Skald? Pretty sure there was nothing in the description of not being able to cast spells?

Ugh, I bet that is it, testing right away! :)

Edit: Yup... apparantly they can't wear ANY type of armor if they want to cast, I tried all the way down to studded and leather. IIRC in DDO they were allowed to atleast wear light armor and have no spell failures. I could be wrong ofc, been a while. Thanks!

I haven't played DDO, but my understanding is that it's loosely based on the 3.5 ruleset. IWD1 uses DnD 2e, which is quite different. There's some overlap, but generally speaking I'd avoid making assumptions of IWD's rules based on DDO. Hell, in the current fifth edition, spellcasting is totally fine in any armor you're proficient in. 2e bards are closer to wizards.

Aye, 2E bards are arcane spellcasters, so will (mostly) be subject to the same limitations as wizards in 2E. The 3E tweaks to IWD pretty much only apply to thieves.

2E to 3E is a very radical change - basic staples of D&D like THAC0 were changed in the interest of making the systems a bit more rational and easy to understand. Most class and race restrictions were modified significantly as well.

Basically, if you are familiar with anything using 3E or 3.5, you're best treating 2E as something completely different rather than a previous version of the same ruleset :D

There is a limit on Familiars in IWD to only 1.. I have 5 mages, yet can only cast FF once.. It is either armour you wear or not rested and spell is learnt, or you have another familiar already.

The tweaks anthology mod (from the Gibberlings 3 website) has a component that allows mages (and bards) to cast spells while wearing armor, but the more/heavier armor you wear increases the chance for the spell to fail upon casting. It has a similar option for using thief skills in heavy armor, but heavy armor has a negative impact on your skills. There are also a few armors in game (elven chainmail is one) that allow a bard or fighter/mage to wear armor and cast spells.

There is a bug, unfortunately, that works for some spells (such as Sleep), when is memorized already, and the Bard is wearing Armor (say, Chainmail). If the said spell is assigned to a hotkey, Bard can cast it while wearing Armor, which should not be possible by D&D standards.

This, did not work for Chromatic Orb, but works for Sleep. I did not test it with a wide scala, and those two spells are just plain free at the beginning of the game, so...
