Edit: Yup... apparantly they can't wear ANY type of armor if they want to cast, I tried all the way down to studded and leather. IIRC in DDO they were allowed to atleast wear light armor and have no spell failures. I could be wrong ofc, been a while. Thanks!
I haven't played DDO, but my understanding is that it's loosely based on the 3.5 ruleset. IWD1 uses DnD 2e, which is quite different. There's some overlap, but generally speaking I'd avoid making assumptions of IWD's rules based on DDO. Hell, in the current fifth edition, spellcasting is totally fine in any armor you're proficient in. 2e bards are closer to wizards.
Aye, 2E bards are arcane spellcasters, so will (mostly) be subject to the same limitations as wizards in 2E. The 3E tweaks to IWD pretty much only apply to thieves.
2E to 3E is a very radical change - basic staples of D&D like THAC0 were changed in the interest of making the systems a bit more rational and easy to understand. Most class and race restrictions were modified significantly as well.
Basically, if you are familiar with anything using 3E or 3.5, you're best treating 2E as something completely different rather than a previous version of the same ruleset :D
This, did not work for Chromatic Orb, but works for Sleep. I did not test it with a wide scala, and those two spells are just plain free at the beginning of the game, so...
