How to play online (host opens UDP port 7777)
(EDIT: In theory none of this should be necessary any more, as of 1.0.2158. The only consideration now is to make sure that all players use the same version of the game, and all try to connect via the same server region!)

Hopefully we can make this process easier in the future, but for now, here's some instructions to help you:

In order to be able to host a game successfully, UDP Port 7777 must be open in the *host*. If the clients trying to connect to the host are stuck in the connecting screen forever, or get a timeout error, the *host* must configure a port forwarding for port 7777.

Instructions for port forwarding:
To configure port forwarding, you need to access your router's interface through the web browser.

1) Run the program "cmd" (Win key + R, then type cmd in the textbox)
2) Once inside the terminal, type ipconfig
3) Write down the IP address of your default gateway. That should be your router's IP.
4) Also write down your own IP (IPv4 Address)
5) Open the browser and type the IP.
6) Log into your router, and look for a tab or menu called “Applications & Gaming,” “Advanced,” “Port Forwarding/Port Triggering,” “NAT/QoS,” or something similar.
7) Setup a port forwarding for UDP port 7777. Don't forget to save/activate the port forwarding.

Steps 5 and 6 can vary depending on your router's brand/interface.

I might have to wait this one out if you guys hopefully add the steam way of joining matches, the friends i play with won't know how to do this as they aren't really tech savvy..also these things never end up working for me because I end up in an infinite loop of "connecting..." ...and paranoid about messing with my router stuff don't really want to do that. So here is hoping you guys end up adding the steam way of connecting for simplicity reasons.

The word you're looking for is Steamworks (https://www.steampowered.com/steamworks/gameservices.php), and yeah, it'd be awesome to have it added.

Oh ok so just to make sure, it's not possible right now to play online using steam as a platform?

I have completed all this ♥♥♥♥ and this doesn't work. I'm forced to use Hamachi, but constant disconnects hurt my mind... Guys, help..

ouf poor you dude. Looked fun but I'll stay away until they support online play like it's 2016....

Please set up Steamworks or some other basic modern online connectivity as soon as possible. I don't particularly mind IP-based multi, but it's not exactly easy, fun, or a valuable use of the player's time.

I cannot get any of my friends to connect and I've already port forwarded

Able to connect with a friend after port forwarding my router. TCP port 7777 worked. Our first attempt at starting a new game failed because my partner could not select a tribe. Next attempt I was unable to attack. Third times a charm?

My router doesnt work with this kind of multiplayer, for some reason when we type in our IP it bring up another company than what we use for our internet, and they cant fix the issue either.

Sad i cannot use the multiplayer feature...

Please add Steamworks or a different online connectivity service... I really wanna play online with my buddies

For anyone having Connection issues: the ports HAVE to be TCP and UDP. Just select the option that says "TCP/UDP" or "Both".

It sounds like you are trying to play with people on the same router? If that is the case, you use your local IP not your internet IP. usually it is like 192.168.86.* or something like that depending on your router brand.

For the record this will allow you to connect but we have been having various different crashes, desyncs, and other game breaking bugs when playing online MP.

Just wanted to confirm that the port forwarding has to be both TCP and UDP. They should really update their post to reflect this, as it's really misleading.

Hey, I do not have access to advanced features of the Arris Router because it requires a daily password and I'm not sure where to get the daily password. How do I forward the port anyway?

I have done this, it is virtually the same as what needed to be done for Risk of Rain - it still does not work. I have opened my firewall and my router, and my friend still gets Client Error 11

i dont mess with this stuff whenever i see devs mention this method for online play i personally stay away from it like the plague, but its good one of the first things their doing is making it easier to jump into the game via online with steamplay
