I'm just going to add my voice to the echo chamber and try to explain why I feel that DonTNod really really sold this game short with such a lackluster finale.

Now I know there are several ways in which to play this game, that decisions of course vary from person to person. Not everyone will experience the game the exact same way the first time through, and I am perfectly fine with that. We were given choices in both how the story would progress as well as how the characters within it acted, reacted, and interacted, most of which seemed completely normal, grounded in reality as it were of how people would and or should act.

So I will explain how I played Max and how those decisions affected my game and why the ending for my particular style of playthrough certainly didn't add up to how I played the previous chapters.

First, we the players were given two very stark choices for Max and her love life. You could get with Warren (for the hetero's out there) or you could lean towards Chloe (for us LGBT folks, although this relationship was approached with both girls wielding ten foot poles to feel out their feelings for each other from safe distances for some reason.). Personally, I went with Chloe. Why? Well I thought about the premise of the game itself. Max is returning home from a hiatus out of town for several years. The people she had grown up with, I can only assume Warren included, would have also grown up. It was roughly 5 years. And the kids are just now entering blackwell. It would at best make Max and Warren friends or possibly just aquitences around the age of 13. In her rewinds, her time is clearly spent with Chloe, so honestly it felt just way more natural for Max to head that direction.

And it is here that I had my first problem. It is pretty clear that DonTNod had no intention of indulging a lesbian theme. I think they did some mid-release rewrites when enough of us shouted loudly enough for the Max x Chloe storyline to happen. I think this rewrite affected not only the releases of the next chapters, but also the overall feel for the remainder of the game. I know its episodic, but no game company writes the game chapters as the game is being released. All of that is done way before hand. So like I siad I think DonTNod indulged us and gave us some more Max x Chloe at the price of a delayed release schedule.

I dont mind that at all personally, as I said before, it felt more natural for Max to lean towards Chloe in the first place. What I did mind was, would it have been so bad DonTnod? To have written the game in such a way? To have it be more natural for two girls to fall in love after being so close for so long? I can only echo Chloe here with "Chicken♥♥♥♥♥."

So if you playd with the lesbian line of breadcrumbs, you would see Chloe and Max becoming way closer, Max getting way more jealous over Rachael, even trying to shy away from talking about her at all when Chloe mentions her, then Max going game on with the kiss /rewind / dont kiss dare. I think here is where Max really commited herself to Chloe, even if silently and by just safeguarding her with her rewind skills. And again, I have a gripe here too. Instead of going through with it, DonTNod again "Chicken♥♥♥♥♥ed" out and glazed over or kiddy gloved the relationship.

I think by chapter four the girls feelings for each other were more than appearant, and I dont think it woud have been in Chloe's nature to hide it, at all. She already confessed similar feelings and hinted at a relationship with Rachael. Am I to believe that that same Chloe would have an issue wanting to take Max on? No. No way.

So another series of Max saves Chloe and we end up in the final chapter. And oh dear god what the friggen hell happened here.

Chapter five had one, single theme. Save. Fooking. Chloe Price. Max didnt care how, she didnt care how long it would take to jump from time to time to time, she only had one mission: Save Chloe. So we do. We do our best to save the person we love, and we make it. We are triumphant. We deserve to have an amazing, heartfelt moment of conversation between Chloe and Max now. we earned it.

But on the way there, issues arose. Weird oddities that I found jarring honestly. One: We find out, even though many of you already scienced this out, that there are multiple Maxes, and that some are not aware of what is going on fully. Ok, I can work this one out for myself, no problem. Two: There is no way in hell that noone could see that gigantic f-6 hurricane incoming. So why the fricka-frack are there people down on the goshdarn shoreline eating lunch like YOLO. THERE IS NO WAY. There are ♥♥♥♥ing WHALES IN THE STREETS. NO ONE IS DOWN BY THE BEACH. Joyce should not have been there, Warren should not have been there. NOONE should have been there unless they were a cop making sure NOONE was still down there.

So I thought to myself, why are there people here. Then it dawned on me. Its a moral thing. Something is going to happen that ties in all these dumb♥♥♥♥♥ still hanging around town while the world is ending. Poor. Sloppy. Lazy. PLOT DEVICES. FFS. Ok whatever. i dont care what is if there is some choice involving the idiots still here, they deserve to be the lambs.

We jump, uncontrollably between dream sequence SHOWING US CHLOE AND MAXES GREATESTS HITS TOGETHER. Its like YES. YEEES they listened, the Devs listened and they shipped Max x Chloe. Awesome. BUT LO. What is this? Wait wait stop. STOP. I think about it again. FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFPLOT DEVICES v2. GDI. OK FINE WHATEVER I CHOSE CHLOE lets make this happen. We go through the heartwrenching play of Whatif's staring Chloe. We lisen to our own minds hating us, trying to fill us with doubts about our feelings. BUT NAY! We shout it to the heavens! We will not listen! We know what is in our hearts!

We come back to reality. Chloe is doing her best Robin impersonation. We get to the summit. We watch the end of Arcadia Bay, together, as we should be. BUT FOR SOME REASON, we have this really bad idea that, the storm is Max's fault because universe reasons. Natural disasters dont just happen huehuehue. So now the plot devices come into play.

DonTNod knows that you know that there are people you care about still down there! OH NO! IF you dont do something! These minor aquitences minus Joyce may possibly be seriously injured and if they are dumb! They may actually die! All what? 5 of them huddled together in the two whales? A cop you dont know, some asshat drug dealer, the boy going through puberty who Max cringes about when they speak cause its awkward as♥♥♥♥♥♥ some ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥s dog, and the mother of the girl you are secretly in love with.

And you, you have to make some kind of choice! ITS ALL OR NOTHING! Either Chloe or the rest of the town! The girl you have fallen in love with, saved countless times, jumped through TIME ITSELF to save over and over again and now DONTNOD WANTS YOU TO SACRIFICE HER TO SAVE 4 PEOPLE YOU DONT GIVE A RATS BUTT ABOUT. How in the actual ♥♥♥♥.

And the option to save Chloe? YOU DONT EVEN GET THE ♥♥♥♥ING PAYOFF. I lost it. Im sorry but you know what DonTNod. You should have taken your own advise and either went all or ♥♥♥♥ing nothing. I saved Chloe Price because Max loves her, deeply, emotionally past the point of friendship. And the most we get to see is Chloe making out with Victoria???? During some hamfisted guilttrip sequence???

NO. No game. No DonTNod. NO. I didnt want a ♥♥♥♥ing Disney ending but the one we got? You can go ♥♥♥♥ yourselves with it. It was lazy. Halfassed. Hamfisted. Boring. Predictable. Some of the ♥♥♥♥♥iest writting since I turned the first 6 pages of 50 Shades of Grey, and that is saying soemthing, cause that book was utter ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥t. As was this ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥t ending. You possibly have gone HL3 on this. And I really, REALLY THINK you should not only apologize to your customers, your loyal players, for such a travesty of finales, but that you should also take whatever profits you gained, and give us proper ♥♥♥♥ing endings.

Sorry about the language. CHLOEXMAX4LYF.

Haha, I completely agree with this. The ending just♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥me off. There wasn't even a unique credits scene, it was just copy and paste.
"That's it? It's already over?!" Why did we do all that other fluff but not allow any time for just living in the world?"

i was way more disappointed by the all the episode than the ending ,got disengaged completely from the story after a while , such a poor execution for a lot of things ,unbelievable , while playing i had the impression that was not made by the same team that did the other episodes

just a little summary :
- jefferson killed nathan ,why ? there's no real reason for it ,or if there is that's not explained at all
- after all the hints and clues in previous episodes the mistery of the dark room was just a psyco-teacher and that's it ??
- art-class : text david and comfort kate was perfect ,but submitting the photo to contest ,why ? are you really that dumb max ? you have only to save chloe and stick with her ,remember ?
but ah ,yeah ,you had to submit the photo for plot-sake ,great :((
-art-gallery : nathan and jefferson arrested ,chloe alive ,but hey ,let's go back again cause there's the tornado max forgot about and had no idea how to stop it ? why she can't just text chloe "bring the more people you can into the dark room to get some shelter or tell them to run away from the town ? but ah ,yes ,max had to go back for plot-sake :(
- max kept the ripped photo in her bag so jefferson can see it and burn her diary ,seriously ? ah ,yes ,plot-sake once again :(
- david ,a war-combat veteran, sucks and jefferson is quicker and smarter than him and we have to help david to get rid of jefferson ? why ? to make trial and errors and laugh while watching david die in different ways ? that was really fun ,but it's the wrong mood for that part
- we don't have an option of kill/beat/leave jefferson after all that he had done to max ? i don't care if david can kill him ,it's max that had to have a choice there while jefferson is on the ground
- max driving during the tornado but no other cars on the street leaving the town ? surreal....
- the mistery of the tornado explained by warren in 10 seconds ????

ok ,the all nightmare part was truly brilliant ,really enjoied it a lot, but why didn't they put the art-gallery part in there ? it would have made much more sense and avoided all the non-sense first part of the episode

the endings are fine to me ,hoped for a 3rd choice but wasn0t there ,ok , just need some more details on both (save the city : max has still powers or not ? save chloe-everyone dies or not ? )

Totally agree that the ending was the worst ever, like the old DOS prompt endings back in the day. I too wanted Chloe and Max to end up together, and for our decisions to mean something. If the player made choices so Max ended up on a date with Warren after saving the town so be it. But, I was pulling for Chloe and Max. I think two endings were way cheaper to produce than a whole bunch. We were sold out.

It's really frustrating how they orchestrated the whole story as a setup for that silly, pointless decision between bay or chloe. They abandoned everything, logic, common sense, most basic human behaviour like running away from a tornado, just so the player has to push left or right at the end.
And what for? To make us feel miserable because then we talk about it in the forums.
Many of us will rationalize the heartbreak and convince themselves it's poetic or whatever because realizing it is just fabricated for ♥♥♥♥♥'n'giggles hurts too much.

We got trolled, basically.

And it's such a glaring gap between this amazingly shallow set-up for a gut-punch and the rest of the story, the dialogs, the characters etc. I mean sure, it's a bit tropey all around but so good, too.

And then that... whyyyy.... just WHHYYYY

Also: max&chloe4ever!

Since the storm starded with saving Chloe of course the end was going to be not other than Chloe vs Arcadia Bay.

And going by sheer logic, the game should have saved Chloe based of some choices... but the point is most probably that dontnod wanted us to decide most of the things happened around Max, ** to the very end ** . And that means we could make contradictory choices too, like be nice to Victoria and forget to warn her, give good advice to Kate and then forget she has sisters, or going for Chloe for the whole game and kill her anyway because, I dunno, I don't want to hurt the squirrels I guess?
And that's what I did . Yay.
I myself was disappointed by the possible endings as well.
*Spoilers ahoy.*

Chloe lives, but they simply drive away together into the sunset? Chloe does not even check if her mother had the common sense to run from a clearly visible tornado or is lying around somewhere dead?

But what irks me more is the ending, where you sacrifice (!) Chloe - it is what she wants anyway.
So Super Max travels back to the point in time, where she got her superpowers. (Or, more likely, the first moment, where she realizes, she has them - if that makes any difference). Let's ignore, that she had visions of the future (!) before (!!).
When she returns, she still has her memories (there never was any explanation, how or if her memory works when she timejumps, just that she forgets everything after a while.)

So she knew exactly what was coming and could have saved Chloe without using (or "awakening") her superpower. As she also knew, the principal would not believe her.
She could have taken a picture of Nathan with the gun. Knocked him out, and told Chloe where the dark room was before she forgot etc. Come on, Super Max, it is your bestest friend (or love of your life), be a little creative!
It was never convincing for me, that Chloe must die to stop the storm - Max not having/using superpower - ok, I can take that. But that and Chloe dead?

PS: I took the liberty to quote some lines from this topic for my blog-entry (http://forum.kortz.at/viewtopic.php?p=7601#p7601). I hope that is okay, of course I linked to the source.

I think devs wanted us to not be satified - for killing off an entire town - by making us being upset about that ending by making it short and unsatisfying. Like, they tried to send us Max's feelings somehow. Good writers know how to play with the readers' feelings. It's the last episode anyway, we paid 'em all already. ahahahahah!!
Am I reading too much into it?

I wouldn't even be so annoyed as I am if they announced that we'd get a S2 with Chloe and Max again. There's just to much unsaid and undone for there to be a satisfactory ending. And that's not even mentioning all the {Current} red herrings with the Prescotts, Kate and so forth.

I chose to save Chloe.

I still stand behind my words for show and tell. Authors can choose, to some extent, leave things unanswered. For example the suitcase in Pulp Fiction. No one knows what's in it. Or the last package in Cast Away. Same thing. But in this ending, too much is left unanswered. Way too much.

I am not a professional writer, not by a long shot. I've never had my work published, perhaps because I've never put them out in public. But I've been writing and telling stories my whole life. And I've been reading them.

I can give another example from the story I'm writing. In it, the main character's whole life's purpose is to open a set of iron doors. She knows only that her mother, father and sister are in there. She cannot open them, no matter how hard she tries. Over the years she visits the said doors, hits them, yells at them, cries at them.

Now at the end of the story, when she finally has the means to open those doors and she faces them again, would you like me to stop telling the story there? It would make a nice ending, no? Artistic, mysterious and open-ended. Perhaps.

But it would leave the reader unsatisfied. My story would have failed if they didn't want to know what happened to the family inside those doors. It would have failed if the reader didn't want the character to open them. And as such, I'd have failed as a writer.

Hmm. i think if they wanted to focus just on the relationship focus and "accepting fate" thing, then they shouldve left out timetravel

I completely agree with OP. I played TTG games and they always ♥♥♥♥ up their finales. So my expectations for LIS' finale were pretty damn low.

As i progressed through this game i felt really invested... hell even the music fitted so well in everything and loaded me with emotion. They dev's should have made other stuff happen in the story because the obvious choice is to kiss Chloe since she has such a big role in Max her life. You can see how they reconnect and how something that started as child like friendship has now matured and rooted in their hearts. 2 adults with real feelings and desires for each other. And the game hints at it so much as you save her all the time.

Then the ♥♥♥♥ing end comes with a super obvious choice which i foresaw the moment episode 4 ended.
It is the classic choice.... sacrifice your love and save the rest... or become a selfish evil Overlord (sorry wrong game) and keep only what matters to you whille damning everything else.

That choice was so ridiculously easy.. For a moment my hopes shined through my depressive premeditation about the ♥♥♥♥♥♥ ending this game would be.. And that was when i saw the highlights of Max and Chloe. I was like: Did the actually ♥♥♥♥ing do it?

But hold on to your hats you daft wanky kunts... AB choice motherhumpers.. and guess what...♥♥♥♥♥♥don't matter.. you don't get to see any bloody ending.. you don't get the see the apex of Max her devotion towards Chloe... or the gratitude of♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥Arcadia bay.. NOPE

Just a little shaity cutscene.. some edgy hipster indie music and done...

Dotnod can you please send me your sticker too for buying your game?

The one that says: Hello consumer, here is a big fock you from us to you.. you dimwitted half baked♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥
