FSX: SE open beta now live [Official]
The open beta for the latest Microsoft Flight Simulator X: Steam Edition update is now live. The beta is open to all owners of FSX: SE and will run for seven days (29/07/2015 – 05/08/2015). The purpose of the beta is to allow players to provide feedback about the update before it is released to everyone.

Many of the changes and fixes in this update will be seamless to FSX: SE players but will be of great benefit to developers looking to bring their add-ons to FSX: SE.

The more player-visible updates include:
  • Improvements for using modified Scenery.cfg files which could previously result in a 1007 error when installing new scenery add-ons. Please note due to the highly customisable nature of FSX: SE it is going to be impossible for us to attempt to deal with all forms of malformatting in the Scenery.cfg files. For this reason we have also provide an option to reset the Scenery.cfg file to the default version.
  • Fixed font file loading not being VFS-aware. Font files associated with add-ons should now work as expected.
  • Fixed multiplayer invites not working if you invite a friend to a Private game.
  • Improved mouse cursor slow-down over complex cockpits. Although we have made some optimizations to this code, players may still experience some reduction in framerates when using highly complex cockpit models. This is because such models are pushing the boundaries of what is possible within the game engine.
  • Improved optimisation of installing/uninstalling add-on content through the Steam platform.
Please be aware that this is a beta build of FSX: SE and as such you may experience unexpected behaviour not normally witnessed in the game. This may include instability and, in some cases, the game crashing. If you are using a large number of add-ons or you have modified/customised your game setup we strongly advise that you backup your content prior to downloading the beta.

By downloading the beta you acknowledge that you are aware that you may encounter issues in running the software as described by, but not limited to, the details above.

Because this update includes changes to the way Steam optimises add-on content available from the Steam store some add-on content may reinstall. This mean that the size of the download for the beta will vary depending upon how many Steam add-ons you have installed. If you are just running the core simulator without add-ons, your download will be approximately 22.9 MB. This may increase up to 3.6 GB if you own all of our FSX: Steam Edition add-ons.

If you would like to install the update please do the following:
  1. Open Steam
  2. Open the Library tab
  3. Right click on Microsoft Flight Simulator X: Steam Edition (which must already be installed)
  4. Select Properties from the menu
  5. Select the Beta tab at the top
  6. In the password field, type – 62615preview
  7. Click the Check Code button
  8. From the drop down menu, select 62615preview
  9. FSX: Steam Edition will now update with the beta content
  10. In your Steam Library, your game will be listed as Microsoft Flight Simulator X: Steam Edition [62615preview]
You can opt out of the beta at any time by doing the following:
  1. Open Steam
  2. Open the Library tab
  3. Right click on Microsoft Flight Simulator X: Steam Edition [62615preview]
  4. Select Properties from the menu
  5. Select the Beta tab at the top
  6. From the drop down menu, select NONE - Opt out of all beta programs
  7. FSX: Steam Edition will now update back to the LIVE version of the software
  8. In the Steam Library, your game will be listed as Microsoft Flight Simulator X: Steam Edition
Providing feedback

Please leave any feedback relating to the beta in this thread. Feedback in other threads may not be considered. We are interested in collecting feedback during the beta relating to follow topics only:
  • Any game crashes that you experience
  • Any functions which are not working as expected but worked prior to installing the update. In other words - did the update break anything?
  • Anything listed in the update notes which does not appear to be fixed or functioning as expected.
At this time we are not focusing on fixes which are not listed in the update notes or which fall outside of the scope of this beta.

As usual, since the appearance of the simulator in the store, Steam must be running to play this game (Steam initialisation failed).

When you fix that I should run the Steam from the administrator?

Thanks for that DEVS! Nice update. Can you say something about Windows10? It starts the distribution today.

My specs:

Core 2 Quad 2.66GHz
8GB RAM
Win 7 x64
Nvidia GT640 1GB GDDR RAM
ORBX Global and Vector
Default Scenery for both airports on the route

Got the beta installed and running just fine. Loaded the PMDG777 with current service packs and am running a flight from KSNA to KDEN as a test. So far, it seems more responsive at low frame rates. My older machine and the low end card are great for most basic aircraft and the A2A models will still get 30FPS in the right conditions. My PMDG stuff is usually the worst due the high level of complexity. While navigating the cockpit in the 777 using the mouse to interact had fewer stutters and overall more panning smoothness than before.

Hope this feedback helps.

Update: Flight complete, memory and behavior normal. Overall, not much drama other than some turbulence over the Rockies.

Up next - the A2A Skylane over SoCal which, when combined, is a big drain on my system's resources.

Update 2: A2A Skylane out of KDEN for KONT. Showing about a 10% improvement in frames, definitely more stable, fewer stutters or drops. On this older hardware, changes like this see big improvements. Thanks DTG coders and staff!

Thanks Steve. We released the beta to third party developers before we released it FSX players. Their support and feedback has helped us to further refine it. I am glad to hear that you are seeing the benefits of this work.

You need to download latest beta of ASN (5687)
CML_BOS_1963 Jul 30, 2015 @ 2:54am
I have had issues with ASN before , however since running the FSX with the Antivirus software disabled it has worked fine.
DTG_Martin Jul 30, 2015 @ 3:02am
If you are using third party add-ons please check with the developer of them to see if they have issued any updates too. We gave the beta out to developers before anyone else and many of them have already responded by updating their content. The latest beta of ASN (5687) being a good example.

Would be really useful to be able to configure the version number reported by the beta versions, so we can test addons that look for specific versions when they start - especially if there have been no changes to SimConnect.

The version number for the beta is 62615 however this may change if we need to make additional updates prior to it going live to everyone.

I can also confirm that we made no changes to Simconnect in the beta build. It is always worth noting that the version of simconnect that comes with the acceleration pack remains our default standard. Please see these earlier patch notes for further details:
