Hit or miss, sometimes it works, sometimes not. Most people say it hasn't worked in quite some time.

I thought FSX real world weather was shut down long ago.

One problem I had with FSX's real world weather was that you could get some weird results. For example, the altimeter reading would shift up or down by exactly one full inch, then shift back later. This would result in your altimeter winding or unwinding by 1000 feet. This happened far too often. Because of this I looked for a better solution. It turned out to be Active Sky.

I am currently using Active Sky Next, which should be available through Steam. I never had a problem with the altimeter reading, and if the raw data doesn't make sense then ASN will smooth it properly. The whole time I've been using Active Sky (since about 2011) I have always been pleased with the weather depiction and have had no complaints. And if you don't like the current weather, you can select weather from an earlier date.

Weather changes appropriately in the distance, which I don't remember FSX weather doing. For example, you can be flying over mostly clear skies and see a thunderstorm far away. I was flying once and saw a thunderstorm off to my left. While I was flying I got a phone call from someone in that area, and I asked if they were having thunderstorms. They were.

The weather is accurate. While the clouds in FSX at your location won't look exactly like they do outside your door, they will usually be pretty close. If the ASN map (which is pretty good) and the sim shows clouds only to my east, the sky will be the same. And the best story I have is one time flying to the airport near my home in the rain, and it stopped raining just before I landed. When I got off the computer, I asked my wife if it was raining, and she replied, "Not yet." A few minutes later the rain started.

If you want real world weather, get one of the weather add-ons, and there are several to choose from. It is well worth it and I don't think you'll miss the default FSX real world weather.

Apparently the arrangement Microsoft had with Jeppesen ended when Dovetail bought the rights to FSX, but I did manage to get it to work a time or two, and I think a few others have as well.

Anyone who wants a real weather engine would be best advised to go with a payware add on like active sky or similar.

It's not that hard to generate your own real weather (for the US at least) using free NOAA Metar that's available online. Yes, you have to set it up manually in the sim, but it's not that big of a deal. If you want it generated for you then a payware product is the only way.

Which ones specifically...?? FSXWX is deader than a doornail, attempting to run it returns a "cannot connect to server" error every time, and it's my understanding that the server has been offline for quite a while.

Maybe there are others that I'm not aware of.

What are you talking about? When did you last install it? I use FSXWX for my sim. Works beautifully, I didn't buy Active Sky or anything because I use FSXWX with REX 4 Texture Direct and SweetFX+ENB. I have never gotten a "cannot connect to server error". Like, in my yr. + of using it. I'm really confused as to how you think it's "deader than a doornail."

I've been running FSXWX just fine since august now, maybe they updated since you last checked?

It's possible. I've tried installing it twice in the last few months and I keep getting the same can't connect to server message, so I kind of gave up on it.

Anyway, I've already purchased ASN, so it's not something I'm going to spend much time trying to figure out. Glad it works for you guys, but it never did for me.

Well I guess it's because it is created World with created weather and real weather is over for good.

It wasn't real anyway.

Not trying to sound rude, but have you searched this forum about this subject? There are multiple posts about this subject. All you are doing is clogging this forum with duplicated and answered posts.

I was going to give FSXWX one last try but now the website for the download won't even load.

Just tried again, and yes it loaded this time. I'll try downloading and installing it and see if it works, but I'm not holding my breath after two previous attempts with nothing but server can't connect errors.

might be a problem with your firewall, you need to allow the program to connect.
