Maelstrom magic?

I keep seeing mentions of maelstrom magic but i cant figure out what exactly it is or how to activate it, im playing on controller if that matters.

You need to find out the button to use the skill.

1) Hold the specific button to charge & release the skill

2) When you do multiple hits, there is a small effect of that specific weapon

I just realized it was the X button, I kept trying every button occasionally but I guess I just never did it when the meter was full, feel like a fool now but thats that.
