Max Resource Tree out to the point at least you have max points in everything in the last row. Which should have most things maxed above to reach but not everything. You'll want to switch to Defensive Tree next to keep getting that last skill for Ancient Leaves so you can get those purple points for the "last" tree as that one is important. Then Offensive Tree after that. Once you've maxed out the Anicent Tree line, then fill in the rest as you see fit.
Always pick all the stat and resource growths you can get while playing. Player character stats have 2 forms of "growing." The standard Growth type gives you that stat every 10 seconds on the 10 second mark. This means for a 20 minute run, 1 point from the beginning will get you 120 points. You'll get less from a Growth stat the later into the run you are so this is best to get earliest as possible. The other growing stat type is Growth By kill. 1 point here will grant you 1 point in that stat for every 100 kills. This is hard very early in a run, but later in the run you'll be slaughtering the enemy in droves making this much more valuable then. Lastly, there are many units, aka stands or heroes, that provide a bonus to your stats as their active cooldown ability. Take the PIG unit for example. At 1 star every 18 seconds it gives you randomly either a couple point of health or 1 point to physical attack damage or 1 point to magical damage. The more stars the pig unit has the more points it gives out and the faster it gives out. Higher values of the Skill Cooldown stat will reduce the cooldown active of all stands. Here is the following units and what they build into for stats or resource growing.
Pig (Green) -> Zhu Bajie (Purple) all do the same thing. Adds randomly to either max health or physical damage or magical damage. Basically get this unit for almost any build you are doing unless a pure magic run.
Mage Eder (Blue) -> Beast Tamer. Adds to Magical Damage for its cooldown. 1 star is 2 damage every 14s. 2 star is 4 damage every 14s, Tamer is 5 damage every 13s.
Greatsword Guard (Blue) -> Guan Yu. Guard does physical damage on its cooldown similar to the Mage Elder above. Guan Yu adds physical damage on its fourth attack which makes having attack speed here affect Guan Yu rather than Skill Cooldown.
Knight (Blue) -> Wolf Knight. Knight adds Max Health on its cooldown timer. Values are 4, 8, and 12 from 1 star, 2 star, and Wolf Knight.
Blacksmith (Green) Adds Ore as a resource on its cooldown timer. 3 at 20s, 5 at 16s, and 8 at 13s for 1, 2, and 3 stars respectively.
Lastly there is the Office Worker and the branch upgrades it has for gold resources and even stat points depending on what is picked. Office Worker unit is a little more convoluted than the other ones mentioned above. Thje basic Office Worker (Green) provides a set amount gold over time. 1 star is 10 gold every 20s. Office worker can be upgraded to either a Financial Adviser or Gambler. Both also provide gold for their ability. Financial Adviser is just more gold over time faster than the Office Worker. Gambler provides gold every 10 attacks at 1 star. Well maye it provides that gold. Gambler is chance based in that it may give 50 gold or lose 50 gold. It usually provides more gold in the long run though. Finally the Financial Advisor merges with the Gambler to form the Tycoon (Purple) which provides both gold or stats. Tycoon will give 150 gold every 15s until you have 8000 gold. After that, it acts like Zhu Baije the Purple pig stand. It will give randomly a stat of either +8 Max Health, +4 Physical Damage, or +4 Magical Damage.
Typically for most runs I always go with at least a Pig and try to build one Tycoon. I also usually go for early blacksmiths as well. The Pig + Office Worker + Blacksmith provide the needed economy growth stats to make a run doable. The gold you get from Tycoon is still worth it even with physical focus builds even if the DPS the Tycoon will do will be pathetic as it is a magic damage unit.
I want to also say that Zhua Bajie, Guan Yu, and Beast Tamer are terrible DPS as purple stands. Probably the worst. Funny enough the Wolf Knight and Tycoon are very good dps if you are doing a build focusing on magic damage.
When doing a run I try to focus on getting least an office worker, pig, and blacksmith out early. I then try to make more advanced units based on my build. I rarely do the Knight line unless I am going for a max health build for some of the challenges or was doing a Magic Damage build as the Wolf Knight is decent dps for magic builds.
Last thing to note is that the Werewolf (Purple) stand unit provides stats on its cooldown activation, but those stats are temporary for the duration of the ability called Awakening. Werewolf can be used in any build as well and is a decent unit. Its attack animation though doesn't make it the best DPS though.
As for DPS units, these are are the top 3 of each category.
Magic: Huo Yi (Archer base), Bone Shield Sorc (Skeleton base), and Robot (office worker + gunner base)
Physical: Valyrie (Beauty Base), Monkey King (monkey + wolf base), and Helicopter (Gunner + knight base)
Also of note the Robot and Helicopter are great AOE based DPS and are not so great on single target versus the bosses. One Punch Master (Saitama) (Purple) is much better single target dps physical damage, and Zhao Yun is the best for single target magic damage.
Either way, you want to get Purple units ASAP in this game as it is almost impossible to kill the first boss without one. Basically 1 star blue units are 10 times the dps output of most 3 star green units (except the shield bearer as that unit is crazy), and purple units are 10 times the dps output of any 2 star units except Zhu Baijie, Guan Yu, and Beast Tamer. Those 3 are like 5 times the dps output of 2 star blues. I mean they are more damage, but they are not that much more. Still rather have one of them than no purple units when facing the first boss of a level run.
As for actual game play, just keep moving. More rooms you open the better and more blessing you receive. The more stuff respawns, and respawns faster. More resources and more enemies. Enemies also get stronger as time progresses and rooms are opened. The game felt fairly balanced and rarely that hard.
That's my general guidance and tips on how to play and beat this game.
edit - I just pulled my video from the last challenge I completed with Zephyr. 1000 ore was done with 2:10 left in the round. Zoom zooming FTW.
i rush 2 tycoon since start and then get full synergy for 6-8 only one punch master
i found this way is more dps than magic build
i think starting a game then killing a mob then quitting out counts as 1 game
