Error 41 Discussion & Solutions
Error 41 has a lot of causes, the majority are from people attempting to launch the game on DX10 hardware, having corrupted game files or <3GB of space on their windows drive.

This thread is for players suffering from this error message to find solutions, report and discuss the error 41.

Please make sure your System Requirements meet the minimum spec too.
OS: Windows 7 or Windows 8
Processor: AMD Athlon x2 Dual Core or Intel Core 2 Duo Processor @ 2.4Ghz
Memory: 4 GB RAM
Graphics: AMD HD5450 or Nvidia GT430 or Intel HD4000 with 1GB of VRAM (DirectX 11 graphics card required)
Hard Drive: 35 GB available space
Sound Card: DirectX Compatible soundcard

Solutions Previously Reported

  • Have a least 3GB of free space on your C: Drive or Windows location Drive

  • Trying to launch the game with computers that don't meet the minimum system requirements e.g. not having have a DirectX 11 capable GPU.

  • Verifying the Integrity of the game cache by:

Right Click on DiRT Rally in Steam's Library > Properties > Local Files > Verify Integrity of Game Cache

  • Being given Administrator rights for users Windows account or starting game as Admin:

Right Click on Dirt Rally's shortcut and select "Run as administrator"

  • Installing the latest graphics driver for your graphics card

  • Using "Display Driver Uninstaller DDU" to remove old graphic driver bits that get left over in Windows

  • Removing a corrupt game save:

Right click on DiRT Rally in Steam Library > Properties > Updates > Untick the Steam cloud check box at the bottom then exit Steam.

Locate your Steam folder and select userdata > your steamID folder > 310560 > remote > backup any files in this folder then remove them so its empty then launch game

  • Uninstalling the game, deleting the Dirt Rally folder in Steam/steamapps/common and reinstalliing the game

  • Unplugging controllers e.g. Steering wheel

  • Not using a Ramdisk for temp files

  • Unactivate real time AntiVirus protection / Peerblock

  • Reinstalling Steam

  • Closing Logitech Profiler / Gaming Software

  • Disconnect Microsoft SideWinder mice

  • Exiting the AMD Gaming Evolved application.

  • Uninstalling the Oculus SDK

  • Running out of RAM can cause error 41. e.g. using 8GB RAM and a disabled swap file. If launching the game with many programs open in the background, like Chrome with 20 tabs then DiRT Rally reports error 41.

Please post in this thread to let us know if these solutions have worked for you.

Thanks

dirt rally is getting annoying
ive been trying and trying to get this game to work but i keep getting error 41 no matter what i try im sick of this, no game is worth this much trouble just to play....

Disconnecting my Sidewinder mouse has fixed the issue for me so far. Just did it a few days ago and have ran the game 3 times playing for 30-60 mins with no issues. Before, I had to run the game in ultra low settings to have a chance to play with no errors. Now my settings are bumped up to medium and no error 41.

I'll update if it ever comes back.

Same here: disconnected my X3 SideWinder mouse has also fixed the issue for me. It's been one week with 2--3 hours per day online or local play without any issues. Running at Ultra settings.

I'm having this issue, but i can't close the Logitech Profiler, what would just cause my G27 to not function properly? :/
Here's how my game crashes on me: https://youtu.be/YXCD7UEAkY0?t=2m39s
After the completing installation 1% thing, it gives me the error 41.

I've had the 41 problem since June. They've know about it since before June. I don't think they are going to fix it. If they can't fix it in 5 or more months then it's not going to get fixed.

@paul138 Have you tried the solutions above?

@Nemaides You can exit the Logitech Profiler before running the game. Please try your crash again after updating to Modern Masters 0.9

If it still occurs please send me the newly created file named similar to: drt_1087863_crash_2015_10_13T22_24_20C0.mdmp thats in your DiRT Rally folder to dirtgame@codemasters.com referencing this thread.

Just tried the DDU complete driver uninstall as that was the only thing from the list above i hadnt tried. Still no dice.

But ive gone back to getting error41 now after the splash.

Also tried hv's suggestion but cannot find a steam_api.dll old enough.

Can you close steam (exit) and then browse to the drt.exe path, and just run the file from there?

Minor correction: AppID is 310560.

Also could add people trying to launch the game with computers that don't meet the minimum system requirements. In several cases I found out that the person didn't have a DirectX 11 capable GPU.

Running out of RAM can cause error 41 too. I can verify that on my system with 8GB RAM and disabled swap file. If I launch the game with many programs open in the background, like Chrome with 20 tabs then DiRT Rally crashes and reports error 41. Other than that I never encountered the issue and been playing since April 28th.

- No it just fires steam up and error41s

Locate your Steam folder and select userdata > your steamID folder > 31560 > remote > backup any files in this folder then remove them so its empty then launch game

- Deleted folder , it gets re-created on launch , but still Error41

Hello!

I've tested all the things above, but its not working. Recently my computer was updated to windows 10. Last time i successfully played i had Windows 8.1...

Updated display driver, enough space, disabled antivirus, checked integry, reinstalled game, shut down logitech profiler. What else? Do you have a beta?
brun9 Nov 5, 2015 @ 4:41am
I've done all the instructions in this post and others for nothing, it is true that I go with the minimum specifications required, but damn, at least to Play no? I have spent € 40 on a game that does not work and gives errors to half the people who buy? that♥♥♥♥♥
