Good to start with story or survival first?
As a newbie that is.

Story mode will help with learning the basics , so I would start there if you havn't played TLD before.

If you are interested in Both Wintermute Story Mode and Surivival Mode, right now I would suggest Survival Mode. And the starter Challenge Mode - Nomad, which is you alone, Survival Mode, but defined objectives. Teaches you the mechanics of the game, and some of the maps, no timer, go at your own pace to hit the objectives.

Just suggesting that for now, since a new Dev Diary was just released today by the Creative Director and top dog Raphael. And it says that Story mode isbeing reworked, from the start. So, starting now, you only have 2 Episodes to play, with the last 3 not released yet, and the first 2 looking like they are being given an overhaul.

But, honestly, it is up to you, and depends on what you are hoping for in the game. (But I still recommend Survival Mode, on one of the lower settings to learn the basics of the game and the mechanics.). Just know that Wintermute SotryMode had no permadeath, and Survival Mode is all permadeath. And in either one, you will die often, and often horribly, as you learn.

Yeah I played a long time ago before, and thanks for the reply.

I've played several hundred hours of Survival mode, but I haven't played the story mode. Even so I'm inclined to say go play the story episodes available first. Why? because there is a fair amount of tutorial worked into the first episode (This is what I hear). My hope is that you'll get to experience the story with the hand holding being helpful rather than a waste of time.

What seperates mediocre survival players from good ones is how efficiently they can utilize time and resources. I suspect that story mode will have more than enough supplies lying around that good efficient play wont be demanded of the player. Thus I believe only survival mode will make you good at survival mode.

Not that I really need to convince you, can't imagine anyone wanting to play one or two episodes repeatedly.

At any rate, I hope you fall in love with the game like a lot of us have!

I personally think that survival mode on pilgrim or voyuager is the best thing for noobies. The region also makes a huge diffrience aswell. Personally when I first started the game, I started on Mystery Lake and I managed to survive about a week before dying. (Big learning curve) So I suggest either starting in the Mystery Lake region or Coastal Highway region. :)

Stay frosty, grasshopper.

Yeah, I think Voyager Survival seems best for me. Thanks.

I personally started playing the game recently, and I started with Story Mode on the middle difficulty. Died a few times early on as I had no idea what I was doing, but eventually got the hang of it and I feel more prepared to take on Survival mode soon. Think that was a good way to get into the game, and would recommend a similar path.

Think after Story Mode I'll jump into Nomad as per IFIYGD's advice.

If you like watching Let's Plays to learn the ropes, I'd also recommend some series done by "Accurize2 | Survival Gaming Channel" on Youtube. I found him to be pretty entertaining and learned quite a bit from watching him.

Yeah I'd say Nomad or Whiteout challanges are a good place to start. Nomad you get to learn the maps a bit better and there's no time limit. People have probably gone hundred or more days on that challange and still won. Whiteout you get to learn where items spawn, how to get them, and how to hunt/gather tons of food.
